The planned Overhealer updates for TF2 have now been scrapped, apparently.

Not long ago it was rumoured that there would be several changes coming to the Medic class in Team Fortress 2, the most controversial of which was drastic changes to the Medic's healing ability.

The change in question, an unlockable called 'Overhealer', would have let Medics double the maximum health of their allies instead of being able to give them invincibility-empowering Ubercharges. Now though, according to a post on the Steam forums, the planned unlockables have been scrapped.

Speaking on the forums, Valve overlord Robin Walker said;

"[There are] no details on the Pyro’s unlockable weapons yet, sorry. We’re still focusing on the Medic, and the underlying system. Your fire axe will be happy to hear that the Overhealer didn’t work out as well as we wanted it to, and won’t be making an appearance."

So, good news then for all you skeptics. Personally we weren't too keen on the idea of double-healthed Heavies rushing our Sniper spots either, and it goes to show that the Valve's commitment to playtesting has once again saved a good game from being broken.

Or has it? Let us know what you think in the forums.

In the developers' commentary on TF2, they go to great lengths to explain how the übercharge was used to create emotional highpoints on a game that has no storyline.

Seems like the "overhealer" could not measure up to the dramatic effects of ubercharge; as a big fan of TF2, I'm glad this change didn't make it past playtesting. Specially because the Medic is one of my favourite characters.

in fact i hope they scrap the idea of unlockables entirely, its just a bad idea imo

You never have enough rockets.
As a big medic player, I don't care about the overhealer, i just want Achievements !

I just wish they would put some of the effort they are putting into TF2 updates into porting Day of Defeat Source to the Orange Box engine and getting some more maps out for it! (plenty of rumours but little substance at the minute).

I knew that medic changes were in the works. I did not know that this was the change they were talking about. I am glad it was scrapped.

I hope the additions are well thought out. Major game changes like this can very bad if not done right. People get used to a gameplay type just to have it changed completely. I can understand trying to keep nit fresh though. Considering I bought OB mostly for EP2 and Portal, it is nice to see that TF2 is still getting as much support as it is. It is an insanely fun game.
