Mass Effect should be available for PC later this Spring, with new enhanced content to boot!
Sometimes it's tough to keep up to date in this industry. Just yesterday Microsoft was claiming that BioWare's
Mass Effect would be always be an Xbox 360 exclusive as far as they knew. Today though, EA has said it'll come to the PC this May - how things change.
EA has confirmed that it will publish a new, enhanced version of the stunning RPG this May. The mega-publisher recently bought up
Mass Effect developer,
BioWare and rumours of a PC port have been circulating ever since.
Apparently, the announcement of a port is part of an agreement between Microsoft and EA to bring future Xbox 360 games to the PC, though
Mass Effect is the only title confirmed for porting.
Mass Effect, which was stunning enough to get a mention in our
Top 10 Games of 2007 list, will be enhanced further for the PC. New content includes a streamlined inventory system more suited to the PC, a new decryption minigame and fully customisable controls for combat.
We're hoping the awfully slow elevator sequences will be sped up too.
Excited that you'll get a chance to play the RPG with a proper set of inputs, or worried about the potential quality of the port? Let us know in
the forums.
Not too worried about the quality of the port, given the team behind the game and the fact that KotOR's PC release followed an almost identical pattern.
My interpretation of events:
Microsoft at release: "IT R ONLY ON XBOX. BUY XBOX TO PLAY IT."
Devs a few months later: "So, yeah.. it was really developed with PC in mind but we needed the money from Microsoft's exclusivity deal. Sorry guys. Here's the game the way it was really intended to be played."
I think my PC-gaming snobbery is becoming a complex..
I will not be joining the 360 bandwagon after all
i'm so ****ing happy right now :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
This is the ONE game that I had prayed would make it to PC!! HUZZAH! :D
just kidding.... can't wait to play it! :D
We would hate that of course but makes sence from a Microsoft standpoint to boost Vista sales.
Hush, don't give them the idea. :p
^^what he said :D
also, on a random note, the article doesn't seem to be loading for me :-/ weird
Sheesh, don't give them ideas, they trumpeted the arrival of Halo2 as Vista only and it was a three year old original X-Box port and it was fugly - not one of their smarter decisions. So for them to actually have something with good graphics, it might be a temptation to make Vista only. I cringe at the thought, please don't let it become a reality.
no really cant wait to play this game. ^_^
Good to see Bioware hasn't lost touch with their PC followers.
And that 14% number mentioned above and in other articles, is really very ridiculous.
Tthere are 10 billion PC's and like 3? million xbox360's.
Because they have already done most of the work.
The majority of work on something like this is not coding, it's content generation - especially these days when everything involves getting real live actors into a studio, and especially on an RPG where there's generally a huge storyline to cover. Even if they had to rewrite a graphics engine to port it to (for a bad example) PS3, they'd still be re-using a huge investment in content creation.
On the 360, as an MS platform, I don't doubt there's tools readily available to port things with comparatively little work.
Coming to the 360 soon, as is Crysis.
Things like RTSes and MMOs don't often come to consoles because the controller doesn't really suit it, that's really the only reason why a game doesn't come to a console nowadays. Even then people try to force it on there (LotR RTS, FFIX, Halo Wars, Phantasy Star Universe, etc.).
Mass Effect is huge, it's got tons of dialogue also, yet it was first designed for consoles.
lol, thats how giving should be (according to the Bible)
Anyway, great news - I have been looking for something RPGish to replace Diablo 2 and Oblivion with (I know this is rather different but it is a high - quality RPG)
Crysis is NOT comign to 360, PS3 maybe, Crytek are not interested in 360. Crysis will most likely NEVEr come to console, they are doing what they did with far Cry, make a spin-off like instincts, and it sucked compared to the Pc version.
You realise Console games are made on Pc's right? Mass effect was on consoel first? point? Crysis, Stalker, The witcher, Spore, Dragon Age, world in conflict, etc.. I could go on, all Pc exclusive or Pc first. Point? Pc is doing fine. Ther are over 100 games right now being developed fro PC many exclusives, get real bro. Mass effect has a smaller world the KOTOR, and exploring is pretty pointless, as is money. The side quests are generic as they get. What is yuor point? Mass effect was designed on a PC, then made to run ona console, the PC version will be better.
How do you know The witcher is 360? Bs, got a link.
you can forget about crysis. even if it did, who the hell wants to play a vastly watered down version on a console? it would eb a shell of its former self. All you are doing is speculating, not fact at all.
The witcher, was desined as Pc only, so if it comes to console it will be 1-2 years old by the time it does. Why even play the console version? Imagine the censorship they will have on that game? Jack thompson would have a field day.
You need to learn cryteks history, they have since SQUASHED any console rumours, saying crysis will stay PC only. Far cry to this day is PC only. They will make a game with cry engine 2 on console, probably called Crysis - Instincts, and it will be average at best compared to the PC crysis.
If you can show me where it has been announced either are console bound, please do tell. what are next weeks lottery numbers.
The fact is Pc has its share of exclusives, or games it gets first, so does console. Pc lineup is very strong in comparison quality over quantity. Consoles have laods of crap games that sell well (Kane and Lynch anyone) Not to mention, start up devs make the Pc their home, just like GSC gameworld, Cd Project, start up devs have no shot on console where royalty fees and licensing just to be a console developer and receive a dev kit are high. Crytek, Cdproject, GSCgameworld, developers like them will always start on PC. Consoles are controlled by the big publishers, dominated by the big corps. mainstream gaming, where creativity is stunted, and mass market appeal is all that matters. Yeah, sign me up, Bah, Bah.
mass effect was built with Pc and 360 in mind, it was only a timed exclusive (You should see the outrage on the mass effect forums). The witcher, Crysis were built solely for PC, if they get ported, it will be a long wait for a crappy version for console gamers. By the time if the witcher goes to console (2009), Pc will be so far ahead of consoles, well, you get the picture. The witcher was released in october, mass effect nov, yet we already have a pC version, not one mention of the witcher coming to console, nor crysis. Even then, only PS3 was even mentioned for Crysis, which has since been squashed by Crytek.
Pc gaming is outstanding.
And yours was so much better? You realise I was saying that it doesn't make a difference, I was rebutting what you said? my whole point had nothing to do with what platform it is made on doofus. Bit of a hypocrite, your post had nothing of substance, mis-understood what i was saying, you had no points at all to make with your post. before calling someones else post full of crap, at least understand the discussion thatw as going on, and have something of value to say. You should try it sometime. I thought Pc only gets games after console bro? LOl.
Anyway, you resorted to the old "insult the poster" to change the subject because I have no good points or arguments routine. good job, very insightful post. Ignored virtually all my points, and just said it was full of crap. The only crap in this thread was when you said Pc only gets Console left overs. Total BS, as all the evidence and games coming out for PC show.
For the record, you were the one who brought up mass effect being made for console, so answer your own stupid question.
No, Bioware are not that stupid. It is Xp and Vista. Don't get me wrong, I love vista, but there are way too many peopel still on XP to release a game as Vista only. what were MS thinking with halo 2? Wait 2 years, and release a dated game for Vista only?
What question? The only question I asked was rhetorical and I even answered it myself, the reason I didn't back up was because it was a waste of my time to try and give reasonable explanations to someone who was obviously just going to ignore any valid points I made.
I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick with my original post, I'm not bashing PCs at all, I like gaming on my PC, I was merely making a point that consoles aren't as simple as you believe them to be. You can have compex, intricate and original games produced for consoles, but you do get the "consolisation" effect. That's not just limited to consoles though, just look at the majority of the stale and generic FPS games on the PC.
I didn't put the point across amazingly well as it was a quick post as I was busy but it didn't call for the hostility and insults you replied with and I was perhaps a bit harsh with my reply and I apologise for that.
But lets on derail this thread any further.
