Nick Falzone won the Intel Modding competition with the Yuugou mod, which also won our own mod of the year.
The Intel Modding Competition,
held on YouTube, has finally drawn to a close and the winners have now been revealed. Over the last few months some of the best modders in the world have been going head to head in a competition sponsored by Intel, with some truly fantastic prizes on offer.
The submitted mods have been judged and looked over by an expert panel of judges, including Will Smith of
MaximumPC and our very own Tim Smalley. The results are now in and, even better, two of the winners started their mods here on our forums and have been featured on the site!
So, third place goes to the
silenSphere Case Mod created by DeathByQwerty, who scratch-built a spherical mod with the aim of making a low-noise, small form-factor system. DeathByQwerty claimed US$915 worth of various swag, including free games and free broadband.
Second place goes to the ever-popular
Team Fortress 2 Sentry Gun Mod, which started right here on
our very own forums. Scratch built by TiTon, the Sentry mod was a case with purely aesthetic aims and had judges practically bowled over with awesomeness.
However, in the end the Sentry mod was eclipsed by an even more gorgeous design -
Nick Falzone's Yuugou case. With an oriental inspiration and classy, wooden finish, Yuugou is a mod without peer or equal and Nick has definitely earned his prize, which includes his choice of Intel motherboards and processors.
Yuugou was so impressive in fact, that it also scooped up first place in our own
Mod of The Year competition which was based entirely on
bit-tech reader's votes.
Want to pass on your congratulations, or are you going to scream 'hack'? Either way, head
to the forums and sound off in there!
Congratulations. :)
And...
I rest my case....
:D
meh. intel knew he ran a modding site when they asked him to judge. it's their contest.
Am I the only one who thinks the silenSpere pc is based on a 50 IKEA BBQ grill? I could swear its the same one like a I have at home
I am a little curious what was the criteria you used to pick the 3?
ya that would be interesting to know, I know it mentioned a few of them in the rules but what was discussed or what did it boil down to?
Style and design is obvious
Functionality - I judged this based on whether the computer was usable like a normal computer. Could I upgrade easily, was there a DVD drive so I could play games/movies from the disc, etc.
Performance - That came down to the specs and overclocking. There were several higher-specced machines than the ones that won, but they fell down in other categories. The Sphere for example, was one of the lowest-specced machines in the competition and it was running at stock speed IIRC.
If you go through the list of mods in that channel, it's pretty clear which ones were in with a chance of winning and which weren't.
As for what appears to be a bit of a dig at me (I'm sorry if I've taken it the wrong way), the only reason I don't mod these days is because of a lack of time, not for a lack of want or interest. I was modding in 2001-2003 when it was still a cult.
I don't think YouTube is the best place to host a competition... the video aspect is cool, as it has the potential to show off some things one might not see in stills. I still think the way we're doing our own modding competitions is the way forwards (there are some minor tweaks to prevent spam, but we're getting there).
Be honest, someone takes a BBQ throws a fan on the outside and a mATX mobo inside and VOILA! a winner?
I would like to see some of your work (or the other judges for that matter), have any picts?
actually no there wasent.
Also was the second place comp even a functioning computer?
I am not posting to pick on the 3 comps that were picked, but at the incompetence of the judging.
what I will agree to disagree with you on is the judging.
25% for performance? So basically someone with a bigger budget is more likely to win (better parts, water cooling or phase)
I think the ability to be a performance Machine is important, but judging it on that is very unfair to people who don't have stupid budgets
It makes me sad to see modding ruined a little more each time. We as modders have the ability to improve on basic computer design (something that has remained stationary almost since its beginning).
Modding shouldn't be guided by sponsors or popularity but original ideas that elevate it.
Hey dude, don't worry - I understand where you're coming from. T'internet has given me a thick skin, so there's no hard feelings. I was involved in this particular competition almost right at the end - I wasn't on the panel of judges originally and therefore had no say in how the competition was run or judged (as in the criteria) for that matter.
This is open to everyone: we're running our own modding competitions and I want to make sure they are the best. In that respect, I want people to look back at this year's Mod of the Year and think of ways in which we can improve it further. The same can be said for Mod of the Month as well, but that's obviously on a much lower scale.
There are some things we need to do before this year's contest, so I just want to say that--as is always the case--we're more than happy to listen to suggestions from the community. After all, without the awesome community we have here, modding wouldn't be where it is today! We' re just here to recognise innovation and reward the hard work that goes into the projects.
One thing I've always said... and I'll reiterate it here again - I don't want it to ever seem like the bit-tech staff are sitting at the top looking down on the community as inferior. All of the staff on the full-time team were members of the community (or regular readers of the site in Joe's case). Recruitment has, and always will, happen on the site/in the community and when we come to recruit new additions to the full-time team in the future, we'll be looking in the same place.
Once upon a time, I was a guy that had no posts after having just joined this awesome community. Today I sit as Editor of bit-tech, but that doesn't make anyone else's opinion any less valid than mine. ;)
