TVersity to receive major facelift

The popular TVersity media sharing application, beloved of Xbox 360 and PS3 owners everywhere, is due to get a somewhat overdue facelift thanks to a deal with design company Trifold Designs.

In a sneak-preview posted to the development blog yesterday, Ronen at TVersity announced that the team had received a new icon set by designer Dylan Wreggelsworth, and they liked the style so much they hired him on the spot to redo the rather clunky (and, it has to be said, Apple FrontRow 'inspired') user interface.

Users who access the software via the built-in UPnP server will not see any change when the new interface is released, as that UI is dependent on the client device. The new interface will only affect users visiting via the web interface, in particular the rich Flash interface.

From the screenshots posted it's clear to see that the media library has been completely redone to feature a more modern 'album-art' style selection process, and a new screen lists all your associated devices complete with pretty icons for each type: PS3, iPhone, Xbox 360, and so forth. The update will bring the design bang up to date, and on a comparable level to paid-for software such as Windows Media Center.

The free package is rapidly becoming the software of choice for streaming to a variety of devices, and the latest version includes an optional codec pack to get you started even quicker. I've been using TVersity for quite a while now, and I can honestly say it's one of the most useful packages I've installed. Sadly, it's Windows only – although the team has promised to get to work on a Linux port just as soon as they're happy with the core Windows version.

Tempted to give the software a try, or are you waiting for the snazzy new interface before you take the plunge? Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.

xbox 360 and ps3 now support mp4 playback (that includes divx, xvid, apples mp4 format, etc....) so you only really need this if you want to stream content to your wii

cjoyce1980 the 360 supports full divx playback including mp4, the PS3 will only do the mp4 part of that spec.. there is also alot of other codecs/codec profiles and file extensions that the 360 and PS3 do not support.
TVersity is great for all of those :)

yea its not just transcoding, but also steaming it and the level of control it gives, which is extremely nice if you have and old PC like mine. My only complaint with it is that it is in beta therefore it doesn't have an ease of use but neither does my 360

I was having a lot of issues w/ TVersity and the PS3, but for some reason after uninstalling everything (codecs mainly) and reinstalling everything TVersity (from what I have seen at my friend's house thus far) is working. When I was having problems, TVersity kept giving this MediaServer.exe error upstairs on the computer and then on the PS3 it would give this error code. Luckily it's not "timing out" or giving any errors (knock on wood) and I love the ability to transcode when necessary because streaming DivX video is so much faster now that it doesn't need to compress/transcode anything.......
