...and Star Wars too! Soul Calibur IV will feature Darth Vader and Yoda as secret characters.

Soul Calibur IV, the fourth installment in the best beat 'em-up series ever made - yes, better than Tekken and Virtua Fighter, sorry - isn't even out yet and the secret characters have been named and unmasked. It makes you wonder if they were ever secret to begin with. Either way, you'll never guess who they are.

Darth Vader and Yoda.

An odd combination for the medieval melee fighter, isn't it? Yoda could maybe fit into the setting with his long flowing robes and gremlin-like appearance, but Darth Vader looks throughly out of place. On top of that, I personally think that magic powers and lightsabers which can cut through almost anything should be considered cheating even in a game where just slapping somebody causes a pyrokinetic display to burst into action.

The duo were unveiled in a new teaser video for the game which is set for a release in summer this year and the rumour is that they won't be the only Star Wars characters on show so expect more bizzare additions to the line-up in the coming months. Personally, I'm hoping for Kyle Katarn to pop up, but it's more likely that we'll get Mace Windu, General Greivous and a Wookie or two.

Either way, Yoda will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Vader will be a PS3-only gamer.

The trailer is available below in all it's surreal glory, so have a peek and let us know what you think. Are you a Soul Calibur fan or are you going to flame us and claim that Street Fighter is the king of the hill? Either way, we're ready for you so just head to the forums.

So Vader's gonna be PS3 only then? Thats cr@p! Whats the point of having two Star Wars characters if you can't have them fight each other!
Quote Bauul 10th January 2008, 12:20
Just look at the breasts the graphics on that! Having Yoda in the game remids me a bit of Gon on Tekken III, the ultimate in jippy characters.
Quote cjoyce1980 10th January 2008, 12:53
hopefully they will be unlockable via a cheat or as DLC

Oh damn, thats pretty neat, I probably could live without the gimmicky random star wars secret characters though as long as I get me some next-gen Soul Caliber goodness. I hope it works on Xbox live though, for some reason DOA 4 is the laggiest game I've ever seen in my life every time I play it on Live.
Quote Speedo 10th January 2008, 13:18
Damnit, I'll likely get the PS3 version but I want Yoda! Damn you Namco! :(

Naruto isn't laggy so I don't see why Soul Caliber would be.

soul calibur rhymes with lightsaber..... :D thats why!

hmmm this may be a reason to buy PS3/Xbos lol... trailer is awesome... but yeah, u CANT really cross sword with a lightsaber without having ur sword melted, come on! :D it just seems like the duo will be a little overpowered. but if theyre not, ill b dissapointed anyway...

woo! yoda n vader limited to Xbox and PS3 only! woo! I'll be playing the wii version cuz i CAN'T STAND star wars. it makes me wanna kill myself and vomit and eat little babies whenever i hear that bloody inhaler voice!

Soul Calibur's looking good like and has probs been best of the next gen fighters but personally Tekken, Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur will never match up to Street Fighter 2 or Alpha 3 as there all far far far far too slow I like something where you go at it and blitz each other.

But fighting game this years going to be the new Street fighter without doubt.

Would be cool to see a new Powerstone game they were class on the dreamcast.
Quote Darkedge 10th January 2008, 14:52
Soul Cashin more like - this series has progressively screwed itself over since the sublime Dreamcast version.

ah damnit, I just made a thread inthe gaming section :D

guess i should have read the site ;)
Quote Tyinsar 10th January 2008, 15:33
Yoda & Darth may sound out of place but certainly the character on the article page must be using some form of special technology or magic just to keep her costume on (or at least from coming off more).
Quote Tomm 10th January 2008, 15:33
So Vader (Evil) is on the PS3?
and Yoda (Good) is on the Xbox?

Coincidence? I think not! Although it could just be that the PS3 is black and the xbox white.
Quote Veles 10th January 2008, 16:04
No way! This is awesome!

Not true, there is a substance in the star wars universe, if you make an alloy with it it's incredibly resistant to lightsabres. It's rare though I think.

But what are you complaining about, SC has hardly been the most realistic game :p

Cortosis. :)

It's featured in KotOR where some of the swords are described as having a "Cortosis weave through the blade" to allow for sword-Vs-lightsabre combat (though even the bog-standard swords with no mention of cortosis can go up against Lightsabers without any trouble.. )

It also shows up in Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, in which the enemy 'Shadowtroopers' wore cortosis armour to give them defence against lightsabres.

Wikipedia says it was introduced in an Extended Universe novel and later adopted as EU canon (presumably because of its usefulness as a plot device :) )

Didn't really like Yoda all that much. Vader was "cooler" in the original trilogy... but with the prequels I just have visions of Anakin-the-whiny-brat, and that puts me off.

Really looking forward to a next-gen Soul Caliber, though. :D

Wow. No thanks Namco - Too much gimmick and boob.
I can always go and play Tekk... oh wait... that's been turned into a juggle fest.
Quote mrb_no1 10th January 2008, 18:48
I was brought up on tekken, so it wins hands down imo as i'm not easily converted. not in favour of splitting the 2 characters between the 2 consoles
peace

The girls from the Soul Calibur series would definitely be pleased if breast-reduction surgery is introduced in their world.. Must be tough fighting with heavy weights on their chests. lol

Anyway, Vader FTW. Lucky me my brother will pick up the 360 version. w00t
Quote DarkReaper 10th January 2008, 22:24
Obviously they are just magic swords, and magic equals technology :p

Makes as much sense as magic/psionic crossover in D&D...
Quote bahgger 10th January 2008, 23:00
I don't even play these fighting games but with Yoda and Darth Vader in a proper FIGHTING GAME?! I'll have some of that pie thank you
Quote Yemerich 10th January 2008, 23:01
As I always say:
"Sony is from the dark side of the force"

As I am planning to get me a Wii, this doesn't really matter.. anyway...
Quote HourBeforeDawn 11th January 2008, 07:08
ugh way to kill a great game, it was bad enough when they added links and spawn but now this... ~_~

oh well if anything I will enjoy kicking the crap out of all the starwars fans out there. :)
