Sony has confirmed, via the American branch, that the director of the God of War series will be leaving the company to look for work elsewhere. Cory Barlog, who worked as the director for God of War II on the PlayStation 2, has not indicated what studio he is hoping to join next.

"We can confirm that Cory Barlog, game director for God of War II, is leaving the SCEA SM Studios and we are grateful for his work and creative vision for the critically acclaimed God of War franchise," said a Sony spokesperson to 1UP.com.

Sony has said however that the departure of Barlog will not affect progress on God of War III which is being developed in the Santa Monica studio. David Jaffe, lead designer for the first two God of War games, also left Sony not long ago to found his own studio called Eat, Sleep, Play.

"Moving forward, we are confident in the God of War team, as they are an extremely talented group of people that are passionate about the franchise and dedicated to creating even more epic content with God of War: Chains of Olympus for the PSP and God of War III for PS3." Sony has said.

The next game in the popular and controversial God of War series will be the Chains of Olympus title for the PSP, which should see a March 2008 release. No release date is yet announced for God of War III.

Barlog hasn't given a specific reason for why he's left Sony, but the internets are rife with speculation. Personally, I think he was bullied into it by a group of invisible rogue clowns. What? You got a better theory? Let us know in the forums.
