iPod Nano bursts into flames

The iPod Nano is hot, hot, hot! It's so hot, it's on fire!

An man from Atlanta, Georgia found himself in a nasty situation when his iPod Nano caught fire.

Danny Williams said that his one and a half year old iPod caught fire while it was in his trouser pocket. The fire, which lasted almost fifteen seconds, reached his chest before it was extinguished.

The fire is believed to have originated from the lithium ion battery which is similar to the ones involved in laptop battery recalls.

While this doesn't seem to be a widespread issue, Apple is taking note of it. Apple has vowed to replace William's iPod after doing a thorough examination of the malfunctioning unit. If a major problem is identified, a massive recall could end up being issued.

If you notice your iPod getting particularly warm to the touch, turn it off and let it sit for a while. If the problem persists then it's best to give Apple a call with your concerns.

Do you have a hot pocket from your iPod or is that just the smell of burning through money in the iTunes store? Voice your thoughts and concerns over in the forums.

Having seen what can happen to lipo in rc planes, i'm always a little more careful with lipo and li-on. I'm surprised that this hasn't happened before.

I have a problem with my nano's battery. The dam thing lasts too long. I like to get a good charge and then almost flatten a battery before recharging it (10-20% left)... Even if I use my new nano a few hours a day it will last more than a week! So when I want to plug it in to update new podcasts and so on. It'll charge itself prematurely.
Maybe I'm just obsessive compulsive about it but in the old days a phone or device battery needed some taking care of so it would last.

More or less, LIPOs shouldn't be discharged completely and it does no real harm to keep topping them up.

That was then.

With rechargeable Li-*** batteries, it's best not to run them down all the way.

Explosions with Li-Ion batterys are perfectly possible, Usually these days its very uncommon due to all the safety features in the batterys
