Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is now expected to hit shelves in Q1 of next year.

Rumours that Pandemic Studios have fallen behind on development of Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for the PC, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 have been proven true after Josh Resnick, head honcho at Pandemic, confirmed the delay to IGN.

The sequel to 2005's Xbox and PS2 hit, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, rumours of a delay have been circulating since retailers predicted a delay earlier this month and EA refused to confirm/deny a delay.

Talking to IGN, Josh Resnick said that the game is delayed because it just isn't good enough yet and the team want to spend more time working out the remaining kinks.

"We don't want to slop out a game just to meet a deadline," Said Resnick. "Some companies rush products out to meet that big holiday deadline for the massive gift-giving season, and we would rather make sure that every corner of our vast, open-world, highly explosive gameplay is completely polished. We owe that to Mercenaries fans."

Resnick confirmed that the delay will not effect any other titles being developed by Pandemic, specifically not WWII stealth-shooter Saboteur. Resnick also refused to comment on whether a particular platform or problem was causing the delay.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is now predicted to be out in the first quarter of next year, providing there are no more delays.

I loved the original as long as it lives up to it I'm not too bothered about this delay as they are to be expected, plus the are lots of other games to play first.

The first game was pretty good, but I never finished it. Kind of hard and involved a lot of traipsing about.

Too bloody right. I got up to about the 10 of Hearts before I got sick of using a controller (PS2).

I'll enjoy it much more with a mouse/keyboard, so I'm looking forward to this one as I thought the original was pretty cool.
