Video game piracy (and piracy in general) is something which is especially rampant in China.

Video game piracy is a massive problem for game developers - especially in China were it's often harder to find a legal copy of a game than it is to find an illegal one. Leaked copies of games are often available before the commercial release and at a fraction of the price.

Think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill? Ask Microsoft what it thinks about Chinese pirates, and then see what you think.

In a move to try and combat computer game piracy in China, a new alliance of computer game companies has formed - called OGAAP. The Online Games Alliance Against Piracy group announced its formation today and includes developers such as CCP (EVE Online) and Wemade Entertainment (Legend of Mir II, MIR III).

There's a load of Korean and Chinese games companies which you've probably never heard of who have signed up to be a part of the alliance too.

"The goals of OGAAP are to establish a platform for industry participants and stakeholders to exchange ideas and share experiences; conduct market and technology research; propose industry-wide policies and practices; and lobby relevant government bodies and lawmakers to enact anti-piracy legislation." OGAAP announced in a press statement earlier today.

"The alliance will also actively promote public awareness of copyrighted online game usage, educate online game players about copyrighted content and vigorously pursue the continued shutdown of pirated online games as well as the arrest and conviction of their operators."

Once again the question is raised then; what do you think of computer game piracy and how it affects the market as a whole? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

piracy is really bad in China, and i think that's why many people are still playing CS1.5 (another reason being most people i met have Geforce Mx400)

personally, i think it's a good thing. but i bet you it won't last long or has any effect to games piracy.

I made it my mission to find a legal Music Album in Beijing last year and I did succeed in my third and final week. I found a Legal Shakira album with the Sony label on it. :) It was the only Legal media I could find and it only cost double the price of the illegal CD's which worked out at about £2 I think at the time.

I tried to find a legal version of BF2 for my father in law so that we could play online when im back here in the UK. I could not find any legal games nevermind a legal BF2.

You can only buy illegal games, music and DVD's in China and it is a difficult taks if you want to stay legal. It is too big of a problem to suddenly change the ways of the Chinese people and making them buy legel media.

I wonder if its different in Shaghai as that is much richer and modern than Beijing. Maybe their are legal media's there.

This is like the Bush Administration arming terrorists and then going after them for being terrorists.

It is pirating, your playing without paying. Simple. Why do you think the Lineage 2 private server (Installer) that was on SourceForge was taken off?
Quote Bladestorm 19th September 2007, 01:41
Are we sure it is actually Crowd Control Productions (CCP) who are involved and not the chinese company they partnered with to launch the chinese server ?
