The 1994 Street Fighter movie - they don't make them like that anymore. Or do they?
There is a generally accepted rule of thumb which holds that films based on computer games are universally awful and vice versa. It's a rule which has a few exceptions (
Advent Children wasn't that bad in my opinion) but is true for almost all film/game crossovers.
The only upcoming movie based on a game which we are even vaguely excited about is the
Prince of Persia movie, which could possibly be just a little bit awesome.
Still, Hollywood never seems to learn and the news from
Variety is that a director has just been named for a new
Street Fighter movie.
First, the bad news: its a
Street Fighter movie.
The good news though is that the director is none other than Andrzej Bartkowiak, who's nickname must be "that unpronounceable dude". Andrzej is responsible for quite a few good films, including
Romeo Must Die,
Cradle to the Grave and, yes,
Doom.
We're going to go out on a limb here and risk some credibility by saying that we didn't think that
Doom the movie was that bad, especially when compared to the gameplay-lacking
Doom 3 game.
The new
Street Fighter movie is apparently going to be based around Chun-Li and her "
journey for justice", though its unclear whether it will be an official sequel to the first film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Let's hope not.
Looking forward to the film already or do you think this could be worse than the
Postal movie? Are you glad that Uwe Boll isn't involved, or do you actually like his films? Let us know in
the forums.
still hoping for manhunt the movie though
I can't see what's wrong with the last street fighter film though, it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad as a cheese-fest really.
with regards to Postal, i saw the opening sequence and the two available trailers some months ago, and from what i can tell the only thing it has in common with the game will be that they're "controversial" and don't take themselves seriously.
It's interesting to see him taking the film from Chun-Li's story, makes a refreshing change from the Ryu aspect of the game. Even if Ryu is the best character. ;)
but me being an old-skool StreetFighter junkie, i will definitely watch it regardless. heck i still like to watch the 94 version just to get a kick out of it through the whole movie! (and kylie minogue is always hot)
those, and how the movie going to follow chun-li's point of view (oh dear GOD if they cast zhang zi yi as chun-li i DEFINITELY will want to watch this) is also another plus point!
the only bad news is... well... its not confirmed that they wont bring van-damme back as Guile.... *sigh*
i can only dream now that Raul Julia is back....;) *raise hat*
Another part of me says: "It'd be nice if Uwe Boll was involved in this one and it financially ruined him to the point where he could no longer [illegitimate child]-ise games into awful films."
The rest of me says: "Either way, this film is likely to be dire."
We're not mentally disturbed, we assure you....I mean..err..
Doom 3 was miles better then the film, though that's not saying much
P.s. Forum link opens in a new tab ;)
Whilst Street Fighter the movie was bleeding terrible, the animated movie was actually extremely good, I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it goes to show that there is enough depth to the story to make a good film.
Though nothing beats Christopher Lambert's Raiden in the Mortal Kombat movie, he was pure class!
There may be something wrong with me.
as for this street fighter movie.... i hope they get it right this time.
Plus the lass behind us was having a panic attack through the while thing which gave us a laugh
Have you even seen the SAW movie series? Some of that stuff you would never see in a video game.
Besides, seeing western actors or hearing american voices of the supposed Japanese characters is just plain awful. None compare to how Nishimura voices Gouki -- just pure evil! :)
