Omega Sektor: Impending success or thing of the past?
Considering the mass adoption of broadband in the UK and considerable expense or traffic to get anywhere, are LAN centres a thing of the past? Is the culture different in our country as opposed to South Korea or even the US where people will gladly travel long distances to meet others and attend a large event (PAX for example)?
The i-series is still going strong, and speaking of which the 31st event is being held this weekend. At it big companies like Intel, Asus and Scan (to name just a few off the top of my head) will be there, and there's even
some eye candy Girls Aloud there today and a playable Crysis! But it's not the same as having a LAN centre there
all the time which people might just end up taking for granted.
However, with the rise of social networking, large MMOs like WoW and even the ever popular party machine, the Wii, is seeing your friends and making the effort to interact a "new" fun thing?
Let us know your thoughts after you've voted
in the forum poll.
Then i can vote.
Sam
Round these parts we say Center :P (Hooray U.S.)
Yea, and round those parts you also elected George Bush.
HAHA lol. Ontopic: I've not been to a LAN party, all I do is play online.
I suppose your one of those "I hate Bush because it's cool to hate Bush" type of persons.
Retort of the year tbh :D
Oh there's also the little issue of war, fuel prices, etc etc.
And on topic, I'd gladly go at least once... the one in nottingham I believe has closed, and to hop on a 2 hour train just to play some games seems a little pointless to me... then again I gladly hop on a 2 hour train to go to the Apple store in the bullring... so there's hope.
that is how i feel about him to
as for lan centers.... they are cool as long as they are not expensive.....
I vote for this one? Or possibly, "LAN Centre? Wha?"
Organised events will always have a place, the competition is what drives people to become good and you get a lot more recognition that those events than you do over an internet connection. Its more social and has the buzz that always goes with big events of any kind.
I could see myself going to a LAN centre if it were local but I wouldn't travel further afield just to go to the centre. Only special events would entice me to make the effort. My main issue is one that is probably shared by many gamers: I like how my computer is setup and customised for me, I'm comfortable with it. When I'm playing on another computer it can feel really strange when, for example, I don't have my custom UI on WoW, or buy scripts on counterstrike and I have to remember how to navigate the buy menu. Maybe I'm just being a bit pretentious about these things but it can really break my stride.
Big words, yet Tony Blair made no reservations about following him into Iraq. The fact of the matter is that a large majority of politicians are retarded otherwise Bushy wouldn't have been able to get a way with nearly as much as he did.
That said, there is nothing wrong with them but I prefer a dingy basement of my choosing with close friends...
What? Politicians or LAN Centres?;)
Sam
Haha, well I meant LANs...
However, I wouldn't mind having GWubba in a dingy basement full of my closest friends. Needless to say he would no longer be a problem lol.
I know a couple of my friends often go to a couple of the bigger LAN party's though
Back when I was at the cafe there was always someone to talk to and have a laugh no matter what game you played but with internets now being fast I can see that the Cafe becomes less populated and just doesn't make the money needed to survive!!!! Also I think the state of online play is great atm, always a good server and a chance to actually battle against different ppl instead of the same ppl day after day.
All of that said I think LANs are becoming more popular due to their friendly atmospheres and also actually having the chance to meet up with like minded ppl outside of a gaming environment.
