Segway enthusiast group disbands

No more Segway group rides? Darn! And here I was about to buy one.

Citing inactivity and an absence of candidates for its board of directors, the Segway Enthusiast Group of America has decided to disband at the end of the month.

The group's treasurer, Frad Kaplan, said that the group was unable to grow because Segway Inc. would not provide a list of email addresses of people who had purchased the scooter.

"We had a list that was essentially three years old," he said.

Segway spokeswoman Carla Vallone insisted that the group's disbanding is not an indicator of falling Segway sales stating that there has been a 50 percent annual growth in sales since the 2002 launch of the scooter.

This only comes as another blow to the expensive self-balancing scooter after many cities had enacted bans on allowing them to travel on city side walks last year.

Were any of you out there a member of the Segway Enthusiast Group of America? Do we have any members who own or have ridden one? Tell us what you think about the Segway over in the forums or in the comments below.

I'd love a Segway, but because they're illegal, it's so pointless in the UK it hurts my face... Shame really...

Illegal?
Is it one of those "you are not allowed to use it on the sidewalk, but you are not allowed to use it on the street" ?

I doubt you could use it on the roads either, well actually does it come with lights and reflectors?

It doesn't. Just ride a bike. It's cheaper. Or rollerblade.

Yup, they're illegal on the pavement, but not allowed on the roads because they're not registered etc.

You say ride a bike proxess, but they're not always practical, besides, where's your geek spirit?!

If we aren't allowed to ride segways on the pavements then old people/fatasses/disabled people shouldn't be allowed to use their electric scooters/wheelchairs either.

Like your not allowed to ride your bike on a pavement, everyone still does it though

Clearly never been to Paris, or half of Austrailia, or many other major cities.

Rollerblading may have been a fad in large parts of the world, but it's actually not a bad form of transportation and is still very popular in some places.
