id Software has made a string of announcements this week, including the new Rage title and two new Quake games.
Alright, alright - so I was wrong with my
prediction about id Software's new game. It isn't
Quest, the long-abandoned RPG/FPS discussed in the history of id,
Masters of Doom. It is, in fact,
Rage - a truly brand new IP.
Rage, unveiled at QuakeCon '07, will be a post-apocalyptic first-person shooter built inside the idTech 5 engine. The engine is
apparently the same on 360, PC and PS3, so that there's no need for complex porting to different platforms. The engine also allows levels to be edited in real-time. The new trailer (below) for
Rage shows the usual technical brilliance we've come to expect of any id Software game.
Rage is, according to
rumours, set to be an open-ended game with a sandbox approach and a mixed focus on FPS combat and driving. Valve and id have recently announced that the entire id back-catalogue, everything from
Commander Keen to
Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, is now available over Steam but there's no word yet on whether
Rage too will be a Steam title.
Also at QuakeCon, id unveiled two new games which will revisit its extensive back-catalogue of games. The first is
Quake Arena: Arcade, a version of
Quake III which will be available over Xbox 360 Live Arcade and which is,
reportedly being developed by Pi Studios.
The second game is also a
Quake game, titled
Quake Zero. It'll be a browser-based version of the original
Quake which can be played for free and which will be ad-supported.
id Software also took the chance to confirm the release date for
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, which will hit shelves in Europe on September 28. The North American version will be available on October 2. The Xbox 360 version of the game is still in development and has no confirmed date just yet.
Psyched about
Rage, or is
Quake Zero more to your old-school tastes? Let us know what you think in
the forums, after you've checked out the trailer for
Rage, of course.
Oh the horror..
Railgunning with an analog stick..
Porting FPSes to Consoles..Just because they can, doesn't mean they should..
Rage looks graphically stunning, but I'll be interested to see if the game lives up to the engine or if ID are just providing another (good) new engine with a promotional game attached.
Either way, it's definitely one to keep an eye on. :D
Agreed :)
Handy link for those techno-minded readers who want to know more about the idTech 5 engine.
Dual analogue isn't that bad you know, and why shouldn't they release it on consoles as they can? several people would love to buy this game on XBLA (Seen from the reaction to the rumours about it ages ago) and it's not like they're forcing you to buy it or somehow making the whole quake name a joke is it?
not trying to have a go but I really don't understand why people have a go at them doing stuff like this when really it's just giving fans something they like.
For me it'll be an instant purchase.
Also heard a rumour of it coming to DS
True, of course, but it's not all that good either. :p
Same here, but then I have Quake 3 on my PC with native keyboard & mouse support and none of the Dumbed-down-for-consoles™ changes which will inevitably be made. :p
Bear in mind that the masses will be playing it on their joypads, so changes will have to be made to accomodate them.
If people want Quake 3 on their 360s then great, port it and let them have it - It's no skin off my nose. I just don't think it'll work and I don't think the Halo-adoring masses will appreciate it.
Quake 3 'worked' because it was fast-paced, fluid and designed as unadulterated deathmatch fun.
Turning it into an awkward, slow, inaccurate console-FPS will kill everything about Q3A that made it a good DM game.
Maybe they'll get it right.. but I think there are 2 chances of that. :p
I won't be playing it on my non-existent 360 so I don't really care all that much :p
(If it seems like I'm bitter, it's only because I'm sick of good games being ruined by console ports - At least in this case the game is being ported late, so the PC version goes untouched. Shadowrun & Deus Ex Invisible War, anyone?)
Quake 3 on the DS>?!?!
Maybe it'll be something akin to the Doom RPG for mobile phones? :)
yeah could you imagine trying to say that 3 years ago when HL2 and D3 were going head to head
It's DX9 based, Carmack's stated that in actual fact, there's nothing in DX10 that remotely interests him. Looks frigging sweet for a DX9 game.
And can I just point out... native cloth physics. That's on in the eye for Ageia.
