What's your favourite game genre? Let us know in this week's poll.

What's your favourite game genre? Let us know in this week's poll.

So, you call yourself a gamer, but which game genre makes you tick the most? That's exactly what we're asking in this week's forum poll.

Are you, like Joe, a Guybrush Threepwood wannabe, or did you like kicking some M. Bison ass in Street Fighter? What about good old Super Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog - do they still have a special place in your heart?

First- or third-person shooters are usually the games with the biggest hype surrounding them, but are they still as good as they used to be? If not, have you, like me, made a move to Real-Time Strategies?

That said, I've not fully divorced myself from the FPS genre - I'll still be playing Bioshock, Crysis, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, TF2 and UT3, amongst others when I'm not playing World in Conflict.

By the way, while I'm talking about World in Conflict, have you seen the latest DirectX 10 features video? Shameless plug I know, but damn it looks good!

Maybe you've had your mind stolen by World of Warcraft or Oblivion? If so, what are you doing reading this? You should be playing, foo!

Whatever your favourite gaming genre is, please drop into this thread to let us know!

But, Halo/2/2PC and BF2/2142 also cut my RTS habbits, but

2. FPS multiplayers that require strategy and more thinking than average.

True, but then again, generally, I don't like driving games aside from a few very good examples of the genre, even if a particular driving game is good, I still probably won't like it as I find them repetitive and boring.

That's an extremely simplistic and fallable position to take. I do not enjoy the works of Chopin, and yet I know full well that he was not a "bad" composer. Likewise Veles may not enjoy playing a specific driving game and yet recognise that for those who do enjoy driving games it is an excellent example of the genre. Do not let a dislike of labels get in the way of recognising good and bad.

its too hard choice to make really
ideally id have the the ability to vote for "games i like", or be able to vote for multiple genres, would be nice to see side scrolling beat em ups on the list but its not like any have been made recently :(

over all id have to say adventure games, nothing come close to the fun ive had playing them, especially the lucasarts SCUMM based games (monkey island's, DOTT, Sam & Max, Indiana Jones, Loom etc.) and well im yet to find anything which come close to the awesomeness of grim fandango and the new sam & max games although a little short are totally cushty, would just be nice if the episodes were slightly more integrated, or maybe had a launcher for the episodes, so you didnt have to leave the game to play the episode, e.g. the episode were akin to a world, which could be played as standalone games, but when u have the whole season additional content is unlocked and just ties the games together

oh well ho humm

adventure it is!!!!!!

I used to be big into FPS, but not much any more. And Diablo II and Warcraft III before that (oh D2... good times, why, Blizzard, did you have to murder my oh-so-profitable spambot?!). I've been sticking with slower-paced stuff along either the lines of Splinter Cell or 200-hour RPGs. Partially because I hate short-lived games, or at least ones with little replay value, and partically because I hate going out to look for something else interesting. The only RTS-type game I play now is Desktop Tower Defense, which gets hideously addictive, while I never get any better.

Glider, you still MUD? That's just pure awesome. I just wish they didn't keep mucking about with GCC so I could successfully re-compile my old MUD and host it off my phone or something.

Splinter Cell?

If anything I'd say FPSes tend to be the simpler games in terms of character interaction with the environment and mainly focus on shooting anything that moves.

I'd second that, third person shooters usually want me to be more tactical then first person ones do. Even Gears of War uses a lot more cover and stuff then something like Halo or Counter-Strike or most other FPS games I've played.

Good or bad is alway in the eyes of the beholed/player or listener. The individual skills of the person making it has no importance to the person playing/viewing or listening. If you dislike something its bad and if you like something its good. Its not about recognising skills its about taste.

Heheh, no, never played Discworld. If I recall the names were Arena and Swords of Chaos. There were a couple others but I didn't get into them much. I now play mostly with a group of friends met in EQ. Haven't ever played an RTS or first/third person shooter. Of corse you sould always give cred to people that do great things but weather a thing is great or not is up to you and no one else. I can recognise the fact taht someone has done great things with graphichs, physics or anything elses in a game but at the end of the day its the games i choose to play that is the best. I think this has gone a bit off topic because all i meant was that if a game is good or not is up to you and your tastes and not to what genere it belongs.
