Word from Taiwan suggests that AMD is looking set to introduce a faster Athlon 64 X2, clocked at 3.2GHz.
Word has crept out that AMD is preparing to launch its last addition to the Athlon 64 X2 processor lineup. It'll be a new flagship part and it'll be called the Athlon 64 X2 6400+.
AMD currently doesn't have a processor that competes with the Core 2 Duo E6850 and its current flagship Athlon 64 X2 6000+ only just about
keeps up with the Core 2 Duo E6750 in a wide selection of benchmarks under Windows Vista.
According to sources cited by
DigiTimes, the X2 6400+ will be clocked at 3.2GHz and will feature 2x1MB of L2 cache.
The sources also claimed that the processor would be around 10 to 15 percent slower than the Core 2 Duo E6850 and has limited overclocking potential, just like the
Athlon 64 X2 6000+.
In terms of pricing, DigiTimes' sources claim that the chip will cost around $220-248 USD, which is a little lower than the price of the Core 2 Duo E6850, but given the supposed performance difference, it doesn't look like it'll do enough to make it good value for money.
However, given that even
socket AM3 processors will work in motherboards based on AMD's current socket, could it be a CPU to tide AMD fans over until
something faster comes out? Speculate
in our forums.

Releasing a new processor night wouldn't help them at all. The revenue wouldn't even equal the cost and a non permanent architecture wouldn't make them more friends with companies such as HP or Dell or whatever
- x1800 series anyone?
I know but it seems to be worse than ever, no ?
Is this not the same thing Intel is doing?
You mean like nVidia's was at one time? Swings and roundabouts, man, swings and roundabouts. ;)
Not quite, intel might be doing it to some extent but they are also changing up the specifics of the chips (and adding quad core right ?) this new amd chip and the last one will be coming out of the very same manufacturing process that produces the rest, its just they are getting slightly higher quality chips out of it as the processes improve, and thus slapping a bigger name and price tag on it.
The engineering teams will all/mostly be busy beavering away on phenom/barcelona and its production.
Basically I get a little irritated when I see people shouting and screaming and proclaiming doom because AMD is releasing these as if it was AMD's idea of improvement and competition, when in reality its almost an afterthought deal - unrelated really to the direction the company is working towards. Doesn't really hurt the shareprice and sales if they close the performance gap half a percent either I'm sure.
