QuakeCon is an excellent place to show off modding work and is where id Software wants to unveil its new game.

id Software, the company behind...well, we shouldn't need to actually tell you what it made actually. Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein; the Dallas based company not only practically invented 3D FPS games, but revolutionised the entire games industry.

John Carmack in particular, who is a company founder and Technical Director, is famous for many small but important inventions which have changed the face of the industry, such as ray casting and adaptive tile refreshing which forces a screen only to draw items which have changed since the last re-draw.

QuakeCon is id Software's annual fan convention, taking place between the 2nd and 5th of August in Dallas, and it is rumoured that it is here that id Software will unveil its new game.

In a recent interview Todd Hollenshead, id Software CEO, told journalists that "we're going to hold off on discussing stuff that we really don't have a lot to show about until QuakeCon. So if you happen to be in Dallas in about three weeks, you should try and make it out, and if not, stay tuned"

The new game which the company has been working on is supposedly based on a brand new intellectual property, which is promised to be something new, but also familiar to hardcore fans.

So, speculation is currently waging. A Commander Keen spin-off perhaps, or a id Remake of John Romero's Daikatana? Hopefully not the latter.

One of the lesser known but equally plausible ideas refers back to the resurrection of Quest, an epic fantasy RPG game which Carmack and Hollenshead have previously expressed a wish to return to.

Hollenshead has also hinted that the existing brands, Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein are still open to future instalments.

"There's not really anything specific that we can talk about at this point on those, but those franchises are still alive in idea form," he said.

So, anyone care to speculate on just what id Software is going to unveil? Will anyone be attending QuakeCon this year? Let us know in the forums.

Don't You mean Doom IV?B) If it's another generic Shock-horror-shiny-metal-sci-fi Shooter then no one is going to pay any attention
Neither Doom 3 or Quake 4 had satisfying gameplay (atleast for me) I really hope id Software comes with something fresh:)

Fingers crossed it'll be Quest. Got all hyped up about that after reading Masters of Doom. :D

I'm sure they were discussing characters in the video. I'll find it on Kotaku.

Hopefully no MMO game. Good old singleplayer action nothing more. Please.

The game id will introduce is called: "Hotel". It's about a bit-tech employee staying in a moderately priced taipai hotel and then instantly loses his mind. occupying room 1910 on the 19th floor the objective comes to simply walk out the front door. Of course it will not be that simple as the games graphical and Ai enginge are to throw all kinds strange underworldish/mafia/perverse/madening/bizzare- like elements to sway any attempt for the player character to reach the front door.
The player can choose from any staff member at Bit-tech and the cutting edge technology and physics engine allow an almost limitless choice of options.

Choose my character and unlock cool Hawaian Shirts as a secret bonus as you battle Evil Pinatas on your quest to escape The Room of Doom!

Don't forget the level which is filled entirely of creatures which look strangely alike and reminiscent of a certain BT forumite whose name starts with an R and ends with an X
Quote Jamie 19th July 2007, 16:58
RTT doesn't end with an X :P

It was sort of murmured a few years ago, but aside from a few concept sketches, nothing has really materialized or been said about it since.

Also crosdsing my fingers for a new RTCW. That game was great (still got it in it's lovely shiney box).

To be honest, if that character which you saw inside doesn't show up, I'd be extremely suprised.

Quote Bauul 20th July 2007, 11:51
It aint RTCW2, that's being developed by someone else (who escapes me at the moment), and is definately in production, release point maybe 2009. It also aint the tech demo shown at MacWorld, that was just a 5 day messup to show off the new engine, but the cars in the demo are an indication that the new engine will feature a variety of transport methods, including foot and various vehicles.

Personally, this leads me to believe it's an RPG/FPS. id have stated it'll be more story driven, not a typical id shooter and concentrate mainly on single player. With an engine capable of vehciles as well as foot, large open terrain and unique texturing a major feature (which is most important for large outdoor type areas), an RPG seems again likely. Finally, Carmack once stated the game would be a new IP, but a name familiar to hardcore fans, which Quest fits the description of. So yeah, fingers crossed it's gonna be Quest. Personally the idea of id doing an Oblivion type game just sounds bleeding sweet, but games can change so much during development (look at D3, that changed massively since it's conception, the whole gameplay style totally altered) whatever the truth is now, it's unlikely to still be the truth when it launches.
Quote Bladestorm 20th July 2007, 16:43
There were unfinished buggies in the doom3 code and they had the hovertank thingies and walker? in quake 4 (Unless I'm getting mixed up, which I have to admit is possible ;p) so vehicles aren't neccessarily anything new, though ones with proper wheels might have taken extra work.
