Intel to continue selling really cheap E2140 CPU

Intel Core CPUs for £40 or less? Yes please!

Not too long ago Intel quietly slipped its E2xxx series (starting with the E2140) into the retail chain at a fraction over £50.

We have learned that, instead of just phasing it out with faster products, Intel is going to continue the squeeze on AMD and just drop the price of the Pentium E2140 processor when it launches the E2160 and E2180 on August 26th.

These 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB processors will initially drop from $74 to $71 per 1000 with the July 22nd price cuts, then again down to $64 to compete with AMD's Athlon 64 X2 3600+ and X2 3800+ chips.

It seems Intel is continually putting an aggressive squeeze on AMD from top to bottom in its product line, and is looking to regain any market share lost in the later Celeron years.

Since the E2140 is clocked at just 1.6GHz, we can only assume the E2160 will be 1.8GHz and the E2180 will be 2.0GHz with the same 800MHz bus and 1MB L2 cache. It's a far, far stretch from the 4MB L2 normal Core 2 Duo chips have, but from the reports we've heard, these chips overclock pretty well.

Thinking about a cheap CPU for the future and still not sure what to get? Can't wait until 22nd July for other reasons? Drop your comments in the forums!

Rumors have it that the Celeron will exist in the future. But it doesn't really make sense. There is no way for them to fit in but as a single core processor. I thought that E2160 was already existent? Overclockers and everyone else is selling them.

I think the fancing rebranding. Celeron was always associated with crap ("Celery is full of water and takes more effort to eat then you get back, just like a Celeron")

This may be good for consumers in the short term, but if AMD gets pushed out any further...well, I don't think VIA counts as reasonable competition, so that'd leave Intel dominating, a bad position even for Intel fanboys.

Hi all,
I'm confused when it comes to the E2xxx series CPU from Intel.
Many considers it a cheaper / cut down version of the Core 2 Duo processor, which I too though of initially.
But when I went to the Intel website, it is listed under 'Intel Pentium Dual Core', similar to the D series of CPU.
So is the E2xxx really a continuation of the D series, since it shares some similarities (same FSB, but less cache),
or is it really a Core 2 Duo processor ?

Indeed they do - only last month the Celeron 4 series was launched.

The Celeron 4 series is all Conroe-L based, so they are single-core Core 2 based CPUs with 512kb of L2 cache and from what I've read they overclock like crazy for really cheap CPUs.
