OscarTorrents has an Oscar statue with a handy pirate hat, just in case you were in any doubt.

In an outrageous move, PirateBay has launched a new Torrents site - OscarTorrents. Tagged as 'The Future of Oscars, Today', it offers all the nominated films for download via Torrent.

It's a pretty in your face move to the motion picture industry. The site offers its reason for existence:

"To all intellectual property landlords: we are aware that OscarTorrents might annoy you -- but contain your righteous indignation for a while, and think: we're only linking to torrents that already exist. Face it: your membrane has burst, and it wasn't us who burst it. Your precious bodily fluids are escaping.

You haven't beaten us, so why not join us? Think of a new business model that doesn't involve overpriced pieces of plastic and skanky cinemas hawking cheap carbohydrates while relying on $6/hr projectionists who can't keep a film in focus -- not to mention insulting your audiences by (to pick a few examples) surveilling us with nightvision glasses, searching bags, 30 minutes of commercials and bombarding us with ridiculous anti-piracy propaganda. Take a look at yourselves. Is it really any wonder we're winning?"

The site is also offering an unofficial Oscar vote - download the films, vote for your own winners, and OscarTorrents will publish the public's list of winners alongside the official jury vote.

Rather than linking all the torrents back to PirateBay, the download links point to a number of sites, including BTJunkie and IsoHunt. Presumably to spread the love?

TPB is surely running a fine line between sticking it to the man and pushing the man over the edge! What do you make of this latest inflammatory move? Let us know over in the forums.

Asking for trouble, but TPB is definitely becoming a lot more political then it used to be.
Quote oasked 12th February 2007, 08:54
Yeah, they like to pi** people off it would seem. :)
Quote orb 12th February 2007, 09:13
Shame you can only get them in XVID's and not DVDR :p

Sound like you dont think its a good thing? It could be good, educate the masses, make the corporations understand they can't ever stop the pirates. Forcing them to drive there prices down to compete, which is what we all want.

I don't agree with encouraging Piracy. I agree with DVD lending of movies, and I agree with reducing prices of movies tickets and so on.

But all this is going to do is let the MPAA and so on say "The prices are so high because you're downloading them".

It's a catch 22
Quote Djizasse 12th February 2007, 09:32
Straight to the point. The message could not be clearer.
Well done lads
Quote Darkened 12th February 2007, 09:48
This'll be quite a bit of fun to watch how it will be taken by MPAA and other organizations in the near future.

I'm sure this is sticking it to the man with a knife :)

You have to give them kudos for the original idea though.
Quote specofdust 12th February 2007, 10:20
Well I laughed while reading their little message to the corps. Good on 'em - providing a laugh at least and hopefully pissing off the MPAA big time.

ROFL - Good Job guys.

Haha, that's brilliant. I love the copyright disclaimer thing at the bottom.

Soooo funny :D:D:D
Quote Skutbag 12th February 2007, 12:08
It is nice to see them get more political as it were. Shows they have a proper understanding of what the consequences are. We all know the person who downloads every bit of media they have and claims to be a huge movie/music fan- that kind of thing will damage the industry, not to mention the whole thing becoming a psychological 'I could buy this...but I could just download it for free.' compulsion.
Quote Swafeman 12th February 2007, 12:27
Nail on the head, the RIAA tryed to close them down and they couldnt, and now they open another website :D!

Think it just proves their point, they will work as hard as they can, but theyll most likely never stop piracy in one form or another
Quote flabber 12th February 2007, 13:40
chopchopchopchop... roflcopter :D

Those guys, hahaha! It's just hilarious what they're pulling of here. And to be honest, I think they're absolutely right. Promoting piracy is wrong of course, but they are right when they say that the current path Warner (and co.) isn't a very good one. Especially their points regarding the (lack of) quality of movietheather-movies.

An overdose of commercials, an overpriced Coke with 70% icecubes, annoying little kids that throw popcorn at people that like to wátch a movie, bad soundquality, non-focussed beamer... I'll take a nice highquality movie at home above that poo anytime. ;)
Quote l.moore 12th February 2007, 13:45
I think it's interesting that they are also making a public vote on the movies also. This adds an extra problem for the movie people. People always suggest the oscars are rigged etc. if one film gets a "publicly voted oscar" that doesn't even get a mention in the real oscars, what happens then. anyway... hard weekend... i can't really say what i am trying too. :-)

Check out the copyright on the site...nice.

Quote DXR_13KE 12th February 2007, 14:23
hilarious :D
Quote sinizterguy 12th February 2007, 14:28
Thats really good :) ... Dont think they can be prosecuted to linking to torrents as they dont store any content themselves.
Quote Boswell 12th February 2007, 14:57
What a legend piece of writing they have written. Thumbs up high for them :D
Quote r-gator 12th February 2007, 15:20
What if it's a dummy site set up by the MPAA to ensnare file sharers? Wouldn't be so funny then.

Just a thought.
Quote buchans 12th February 2007, 15:40
blatant and with no fear, I like it :)
Quote randosome 12th February 2007, 15:56
wow that's certainly a fancy move, they've got the MPAA/RIAA on the ropes :p

Anyway, they may as well just put up a two finger salute with MPAA/RIAA on it :p
Quote jakenbake 12th February 2007, 16:17
uh-mazing.
Quote Solidus 12th February 2007, 16:57
well according to the other article posted - it seems piracy doesnt really do anything to sales....fancy that!
Quote Lazarus Dark 12th February 2007, 17:20
I think this is the way to go in fact. Piracy in secret and hiding only proves the mpaa/riaa's point. But out in the open like this, with clear explanation as to why sales are down and piracy is up, along with suggestions for improving the situation is perhaps a good start to actual change.

Or they'll just raise prices because of the "rampant" piracy, instead of trying to compete or change.

probably the latter I'm afraid.
Quote Kipman725 12th February 2007, 18:27
the music industry is strange, usualy companies lower prices to reflect decreasing demand but they increase them. How strange.
Quote airchie 12th February 2007, 21:18

I love it.

Can't wait to see what the **AA's reply will be to this one!!! :D
