Wii is outselling PS3 in the US and Sony obviously doesn't like it.
Dave Karraker, a Sony Computer Entertainment America representative, dismissed Nintendo's Wii console as an impulse buy in an interview with The New York Times.
He claimed that because the Playstation 3 is considerably more powerful than the Wii, the two shouldn't be in same category. "Wii could be considered an impulse by more than anything else," he said.
Karraker claims that the Wii is attracting new gamers to the market, while the PS3 is attracting hardcore gamers. Wii is suffering from shortages across the US, while the PS3 is widely available across the country.
The Sony rep suggested that Nintendo was trying to fake demand by shipping less stock, but a Nintendo spokesperson was quick to rubbish that suggestion, claiming that the company is shipping at least the same number of consoles as Sony.
Nintendo is believed to be shipping around one million Wii consoles are being shipped globally every month, with the US receiving half of that allocation. This is many more than the 100,000 PS3's Sony has claimed to be shipping to the US each month.
Have you managed to get hold of a Wii? Let us know
in the forums.
And on top of that I'm after one because I think that in someways they are the correct way for console's to move, not becuase of what that Sony Guy said.
They should just admit that PS3 was a screw up.. to narrow market and expensive. :(
Impulse buy? My arse!
And yes, I'm laughing at Sony like everyone else :)
But just taking a look at Ebay - they seem to be selling for well over £200, and Amazon want over £300. Play are still listing them at the original £180, but no stock. Impulse buy, maybe. But it certainly doesn't look like one that's having difficulty finding buyers. I know which boat I'd rather be in if I were Sony.
I've got my Wii, I'm happy. :)
After playing my mates, I would buy a Wii just for Wii sports, it's a fantastic console.
Wii Sports and Zelda were the main reasons why I got mine, but I was even able to get my parents into playing the Wii with the help of Wii Sports, and they hate video games, so how's that for a good console, eh? :P
<A88>
Wii focused the "joy" in playing, and Sony tried to be the most resourcefull videogame ever made fogeting the fact that people who buy consoles are loking for fun.
Actually a very common mistake...
PS3 is like a (expensive) porn movie with a very intricate story and lot's of CG in it.
Although it sounds ridiculous, that's actually a really good analogy.
Personally i think it's a shame that Sony has fallen flat on its face. The PS3 concept was kinda cool and we definitely need someone to compete with Microsoft at the "high" end. I can't see them recovering, in the gaming sector, from this though.
Sour grapes tbh.
If my local Game has the Wii in stock, I'll be buying one this Saturday. :)
Wii is doing well and good for them, seems like a good idea they launched with and it seems people are thinking the same and buying it.
Sony need to get down off their high horse. In this three horse race they're going to come last. If I wasn't saving for a house I'd buy a Wii first and a 360 second. PS3 comes in at P3.
First of the 5 stages of greiving
That their console is already dead, next will come anger, watch out :D
Sony just shut up or admit you are damn jealous and get on with breaking promises and lying to your customers.
You know, Nintendo could shift alot more Wii's if they brought out some sort of ad campaign aimed at fat people, and basically show how playing it can give you good exercise (like the guy in that recent article who played Wii Sports). It wouldn't then surprise me if you saw Wii's popping up in gym's around the UK and the US. And who knows, it might then recieve Government backing to help the fight against obesity! But that might be going a bit too far in this case :D
Wii rules. Full stop.
"Uh guys.... our product isnt selling.... do we improve it or rubbish the opposition?"
"Lets rubbish the opposition and hope people ignore the facts... sounds like a plan to me..."
an impulse buy does not mean that those who have bought on impluse are going to sell it.
I bought my TV on impuse because it was cheap and on offer and still have it 7 years later.
tbh the ps3 fell through cos of the price and the time it has taken to be released... if they had got it out sooner like inbetween the 360 and wii and at a lower price they might have stood a chance..
also i think they should of done what the 360 did.. they should have left the blue ray off and released it lated on either as an addon or a new version...
i have to agree with that.
its like the wow thing....
other mmorpg's (including sony's) aim for a far smaller market, wow goes and grabs all those guys that never play'd a game before...
same goes for ps3 and wii....
You mean "rewording"? or "to be reworded"?
Sorry, it was just so ironic I couldn't resist :)
Im not that shocked that the Wii, a true gamers console imo, is doing better than the PS3 so far. Its cheap and its fun. PS3 is expensive and true value has yet to be seen in the games and Blu Ray, not really a casual gamers realm.
Good to know that Nintendo is not at all dead as most would have liked to think.
on the other hand i would say that sony is right. the Nintendo wii is really more of an impulse buy than the PS3. if i wanted to get the PS3 i would have to go in to debt.
i think that sony needs to own up to the fact that Nintendo successfully re-defined "next generation". that phrase now means to me that there is a new group of people who are willing to play video games who are not the best button mashers in the world. you have all seen the videos of peoples parents and even grandparents playing the wii and doing pretty good at it. i have been a gamer for a long time, since the days of Atari and apple IIe, and since that time the lines of who plays and who does not were pretty clearly drawn. now thanks to Nintendo they have become lines in the sand once again. my hat is off to Nintendo for thinking outside the box. shame on sony for trying to put them down for that.
Like what? Resistance? All I've seen of that game might as well be screenshots as almost every PS3 I've seen on display is locked up. Seriously, I've been to at least 4 retailers that have a frozen PS3 on display, or it's turned off altogether. Not a huge selling point, IMO. Why would I want to spend $600 on something that won't even work for a few minutes at a time as a display model? When I have had the rare chance to see one in action, I was not impressed at all.
I've was always a Sony player, even went as far as buying an original xbox when my PS2 crapped out, only to ebay it a few months later for another PS2. Now I have a 360, and if I do get another console, it will be a Wii.
I really think Sony sunk their own boat this time around.
Nintendo: Our games are fun
Sony: Err Umm... photo realistic! *hides behind wall of outward blame*
not really....IIRC some statistics say that the 360 sold more consoles this Christmas than the wii and the ps3.
Now i measured it in a site called nexgenwars.com, and noticed that for a slice of time the wii sold more than the 360 and the 360 sold more than the ps3 .
Childish *******s
:) :)
i wouldnt say the the wii is only just for new gamers. everyone that i know who is a gamer wants the wii over the ps3.
this statment is also false in terms of the attractiveness of the consoles. i would assume that a new gamer would go for the "all bells and whisles" console over the less powerfull one due to lack of knowledge of what is actually better because it seems like the "safer option"
however this is not the case with the ps3. it isnt taking off with new gamers because of the price, this makes the wii the safer option because you wont get burned on price if it all goes wrong with the console.
the wii isnt an impulse buy due to the fact that people are still queing up outside stores for them to open to get hold of one. this shows that thought has been put into the decision to obtain a wii instead of seeing one in a shop and getting it there and then. this isnt the case since there arnt any in the shops because they sell out in minutesof arriving into the store
I bought my PSP on impulse, and if I get a Wii it would also be an impulse buy. Anything under £200 that seems to be good value for money I tend to buy on impulse.
Sony are just jealous as something priced at £500 isn't going to fit into the "oh that looks cool, I'll buy one while I'm walking past the store" category!
I completely agree (for once) with Sony on this; the Wii is fun for five minutes then it gets dull and monotonous. People see a different form of gaming which is more accessible to the stereotypical non-gamer, and buy it on impulse. This is just my opinion, but dismissing Sony as childish for expressing their views on a competitor is a bit over the top.

3.3 Wii's sold for each PS3 sold is not impulsive buying
If people really wanted the PS3 then all stocks in the world would be exhausted, preorders and queues everywhere. Sales would've very very quickly exceeded Wii's if what Sony says is true.
In my opinion the PS3, Xbox 360 & Wii, are all in the same general category as the PS2, Nintendo 64, and Atari 2600: They are all game consoles. The only difference to me is that they are not all currently being produced. The PS3, Xbox 360 & Wii (as well as the PS2 & Xbox) may not all be from the same "generation" but I think it's fair to compare all consoles in the "currently being produced" category.
Imagine if there were only three automobile manufacturers in the world and each made only one model of car or van or truck or... Would each be in it's own category or would there only be one category with three choices?
I wasn't referring to christmas. If you compare launches between the 360 and the PS3, the PS3 has sold more units withing the same timeframe that the 360 was capable of selling in both Japan and the U.S. Sony has yet to Launch in Europe to top it off.
I'm not agreeing with Sony's statement. But when people say baseless arguements like Nintendo being the only company thinking of the consumer I just have call em out on it. Why? Is it because they priced their hardware within your comfort zone? Since when was it taboo to push hardware to the limit. Microsoft did it and people knocked em for it, now they are doing quite well, not Sony is wrong for doing it too? And Nintendo, the same company that LIED to it's Gamecube owners about Zelda not going to the Wii is this great god gaming everyone has been waiting for becaue they instituted technology that has already been available and now it's "innovative"? I don't buy into buzzwords like most people do. If they are claiming motion sensing I'de expect link to swing his sword sideways when I swing sidways. I'de expcet linkg to mimic every MOTION of my controller. Not a pre-determined motion based on any motion the controller does. If they were so innovative it people wouldn't be confusing tilt sensoring with full motion like they do when comparing the PS3/Wii.
I dont think sony is going to do nearly as well as it has in the past largely because they have built a console which is in a different market segment to the past launches (what £100- for PS1, £200 for PS2 and now likely £500 for PS3 ?) Its also telling that even with massive production and supply problems they are failing to sell what they are shipping.
It doesn't help that they have few good titles available and the list of future exclusives is shrinking month on month.
Last on the sony mentioning - they are still losing a significant amount on every console they sell, aiming to try and buy there way into the market rather than make a profit and that can't be healthy when a business keeps doing it to a greater and greater degree to try and save face.
The Wii seperately is doing very well for a few reasons, starting with real innovation in gameplay, adding in effective advertising that shows it off and last but not least having a price point around about where the PS2 was in the previous generations.
I think Nintendo will be well positioned for the because they are actually making a bit of money on every one of these consoles that are flying off the shelves.
Ultimately I wish them all luck because competition is only good for us consumers, I'm just a bit cynical when it comes down to "sony will win because they are sony!!" :P
I don't think much would be too daunting if you were making £60k a year.
I might eventually get an xbox since it offers some nifty games. I'm definitely going to get a Wii b/c my woman will participate in the game play and probably enjoy it too. I'm not going to get a PS3. Back in college, I knew a lot of people who had PS2s. Sure there were some cool looking games, but for the most part people sat on their anti-social butts playing their Wii. People gamed together on xboxes, and we all go together on the GameCube for some nice rounds of Smash Bros. Then there was my freshman year roommate who sat by himself playing PS2 for hours at a time when he wasn't zombified by counterstrike.
Xbox = social activity for guys.
Wii = social activity for guys and gals.
PS3 = antisocial activity, especially among guys who have 1000 CDRs of anime in their bedroom.
This post is naive.
Sony are innovative? Ever since the success of the Walkman, all they have created is failed proprietary format after failed proprietary format.
With the PS2, DVD as a standalone technology had no competition, it was clear from day one that is offered far superior video and audio quality over VHS (which was already a decade old).
Blu-Ray on the otherhand is going head-to-head with HD-DVD, which in my opinion offers the same if not better performance at a much cheaper price...
Too bad, this article just shows that sony is run by a bunch of 5 year old kids. Its like crying out and telling that the other kid in his block hit him when all the other kid did was play around with his new toy airplane. lol
Since it was nintendo that introduced me.. and well the world... as to how console gaming should be, then rightly so should it take the throne
I think it's more like myself:
When my girlfriend says "Brad Pitt is gorgeous!"
I say: "Maybe. But he's GAY!"
I'll stick with my 360.
Although people have been modding the remotes for PC use.
