The ASUS W5Fe incorporates Sideshow.

ASUS is showing off its latest laptop with Windows Sideshow technology. This is the new feature in Vista that allows you to do things like calendar, email, to do and music via an external screen mounted to the lid of the notebook.

The W5Fe is a 12" widescreen notebook which has is powered by Core Duo. It has a 2.8" 320x240 external screen which can be used with Sideshow - you can even use the Gadgets built into the OS. It has 1GB of flash memory to act as operating system storage and system memory - in essence, the Sideshow display is a mini computer built into the lid. The external Sideshow syncs with your main system when its powered on.

It's a pretty nifty little device, and sideshow looks like it could be a good battery saver if you're running low and need to check your email. On the other hand, given the popularity of Windows Mobile devices, is a 320x240 device better on a laptop lid or portable on your phone? It's debatable, but there's no doubt that the Sideshow device at least looks pretty funky.

Do you like the idea of Sideshow? Let us know over in the forums.

Looks sweet! I wonder how long that screen will survive daily use on the outside though.

Make it removable and I will put it on the front of my desktop!

Good, an external display that's only on when the laptop's in the bag. Just what the doctor ordered.

I second Cthippo's remark.

Looks nice, but i don't really see the point, may as well just get a tablet PC.

This is essentially a scaled-up version of the screens you get on the back of a clamshell phone that tell you the time, whose calling, etc, correct?
