Someone has finally managed to strip the clothes off NVIDIA's G80 graphics processor.

The folks at VR-Zone got a little bored at a LAN Party and decided to reveal what many of us have been waiting for since the GeForce 8800 launch on November 8th. The subject was a card that had passed away during a serious bout of frost.

So, you've been wondering what 691 million transistors look like? Well, you needn't wait any longer.

Considering the size of the thing, we don't think it'll be long before NVIDIA shrinks it to 80 nanometres and it'll be interesting to see how much that'll help to shrink NVIDIA's costs on it's latest and greatest.

Got a thought to share? Drop it in the forums.

Sooo .. you reckon 8800 GS and 8900 GT or ? :D

I reckon I'l want to buy a card once a couple decent DX10 games are out but the current ones just seem a little too pricey/power hungry for my liking, a shrink could be just the ticket

Enjoying your little run there CT?

Removing that IHS wasn't so hard; it's just 8 screws.

It's the outside of a (dead) microprocessor. How excited are we supposed to get about it?

It's the same thing in every thread. Rattle?

Eh? :?

It is (was) bonded with epoxy...

Did anyone else think this article was about a hack to make nVidia's latest girl demo naked, like Dawn from the FX series?
Quote Tim S 10th December 2006, 13:52
she's already naked - you just have to know where to look. ;)

It's the 2D part of the GPU, Nvidia decided to put it there to reduce the already enormous size of the main GPU :D
Quote gvblake22 13th December 2006, 04:21
wow, what is all over the surface of that board?! The thing looks like a terrible mess!

It looks like di-electric grease or some plasticoat lacquer to protect the PCB from condensation. :)

I think there are other, not so obvious reasons actually. I think we're going to see a dedicated CUDA processor at some point - for that, they obviously don't need a RAMDAC since it'd be used as a floating point processing device and nothing more. :)
