The unlucky guy even put a picture of himself queuing to prove it was genuine. What an idiot.

For those of you angered by people queuing up for the Playstation 3 and then selling it on for a profit I bring you a rather entertaining yarn.

It starts with a young man from Boston, who waited in his local BestBuy line for 40 hours to ensure he got hold of his Playstation 3 come release day. Once he secured his purchase he quickly ran home and jumped on eBay. So desperate was he to make his Playstation 3 stand out form the crowd on the auction floor he had also bought a whole host of games, an extra controller as well as a free 2 year warranty worth $100. The package he offered looked pretty tasty.

It really was looking good for ebayer kusakay - 26 positive feedbacks and the chance to earn an absolute fortune, all just for standing in a queue for 40 hours. However, kusakay made a mistake and instead of putting the Playstation 3 up for auction for $0.99 he clicked the 'buy it now' button. As would be imagined the kit, worth over $1,000, was swiftly snapped up by a buyer called geeqnastie. All for less than a measly dollar.

If this isn't a hoax then no doubt the Playstation 3 will actually end up 'stolen' before it can be posted when the fool realises his mistake. Either way it just highlights what stupidity/lack of sleep can actually do to you. You have been warned.

Check the auction out for yourself here then have a laugh with the rest of us in the forums.

Meh, what are they going to do, leave negative feedback? eBay's rules are tilted to protect sellers (who pay eBay's bills) over buyers and since this was obviously a mistake I don't think the "Buyer" has any real chance of getting anything except his $.99 back.

thats what u get for jacking up MSRP for ur own personal fortune. im not saying its legally wrong... it is a valid way to make money... but jeez i hate those people.
Quote Tyinsar 23rd November 2006, 15:44
I'm not a big fan of people who do this either (I'd put them about equal to ticket scalpers. However, if the buyer insists on the $0.99 price he / she is no better - maybe even worse - In my mind, preying on someone's mistake is worse than preying in their greed.

In the end I suspect Cthippo is correct so it's a moot point.
Quote DarkReaper 23rd November 2006, 16:53
I'd refund the buyer his 99c, plus shipping and an extra few dollars for the trouble, then put the auction up again properly.

Gotta agree with this. He deserves to lose it for 99 cents - can't stand the greedy tossers who resell these things on the internet. Yes it's supply and demand, but it sucks for all the people who aren't crazy enough to spend 1k but would still like to get one of the things.

If I were him i'd retract it (and im damn sure alot of other people would!) from the auction - no way i'd sell it for $0.99 - the worst that can happen is a negative feedback, oh well who cares!!!

Gotta be an idiot if he hands it over!!

I would force him to give it up for $.99. He was greedy, careless, and people like him hurt the market for people who actually want the console. I believe eBay should have banned the sale of PS3s until a long time after the release to prevent such greedy individuals from marking up and reselling PS3s.

Judging by the pictures this guy had 4 to sell, although I can't see if he's selling/sold them all on eBay or if they all went for $0.99, but still, some ridiculously optimistic bidder is going to be very disappointed in the form of canceled auction or an empty box.

...but quickly of course. Before the value goes back down to RRP.
Quote DarkReaper 23rd November 2006, 22:42
But of course. I'm just laughing to myself at the whole furore, in the grand scheme of things it's gonna make zero difference whether you get a console now or in a months time - why such a massive brand loyalty to a company who can't even organise themselves enough to provide a sufficient supply of consoles at launch
Quote r4tch3t 23rd November 2006, 23:12
Ha serves him right, if he didn't actually want one, he shouldn't have been there lining up and not letting others get one who genuinely want one so much as to line up for that length of time.
Quote Cthippo 23rd November 2006, 23:28
I think you guys may be missing the point on somthing here. THe way I read it he meant to start it with a beginning bid of $.99, which would have let the marketplace decide what it was worth. I could be wrong though...
Quote r4tch3t 23rd November 2006, 23:34
Yes that is what he ment to do, but I still think it is unfair for those who lined up for one.

Honestly, buying 4 consoles? That's evil! Think about it, you know there's only a ridiculously small number consoles in the entire United States, and you snap up four of them so the people who were lining up and entitled to these consoles have to turn around and pay double...

I'm not a console man, but I still think this guy oughta be lynched.
Quote Stuey 24th November 2006, 07:22

Entitled? For Pete's sake, it's a bloody console!! A luxury item and one with specially poor value. Nobody is entitled to it, no matter how "hardcore" they think they are...Camped for 40 hours and didn't catch one? Bad luck...try in 5 years with PS4, or alternatively, get a life and wait 6 months.

I can't understand such a hate towards the guy. Ok, it's funny as hell, he made a mistake, got self-pwned and we all got some laughs. And no, he won't sell it for .99c and there's little eBay or the buyer can do about it. But the people guilty of this buying madness are not the guys selling the consoles...are the imbeciles that paid up to 1000€ for a X360 last year, and the retards that are going to pay even more for the PS3 this year.

But hey, "a fool and his money..." and all that stuff.

I don't think Ebay can make it go through... they could suspend the seller's account at worst, but in cases like this where it is clearly a mistake in the listing (and honstly, no-one could expect a buy-it-now of 99c to be serious) they would probably just issue a caution. The buyers could try and sue for breach of contract, but only a true muppet would risk the kind of legal fees that would incur if the case went against you.

He won't sell it. What's getting a bit of negative feedback going to do, make him cry?

Worst case, he doesn't send it, refunds (if the seller even sent $$ already with Paypal or the like) the seller, closes out that eBay account, and opens another.

Although, I would like to be a fly in the e-mail server these two are going back and forth on for this... :D

As for the whole "he shouldn't have bought 4 of them just to resell at a huge markup" discussion. My take is this. It's no different than getting an account with a huge distributor, buying high-end motherboards / cpus / video cards, marking them up significantly, and reselling them. Yeah, he prevented 3 other people from getting one, I'm willing to bet that about 2-3 weeks before X-Mas, major retailers in big cities are going to get good-sized PS3 infusions.

yes they proably are i can wait i hope they go down in price a bit lol

wont happen but think of it lol
Quote Stuey 24th November 2006, 19:12
They're not going to come down in price for a looooong time unless Microsoft and Nintendo gain a dramatic advantage.

Don't forget, Sony's selling these consoles at a loss...

I don't expect there to be too many additional PS3s until next year. Well, at least you're not going to see them on the shelves just sitting there. The Wii will be going quickly too, but with weekly shipments, a lot more people will go home satisfied.
Quote Tyinsar 24th November 2006, 19:56
But if MS is making a profit already they could afford a price cut, negate or at least shrink Ninty's cost advantage, and hurt Sony all at the same time.
Quote Cleric_silencer 24th November 2006, 21:49
agree, he got what he deserved. haste makes waste.
Quote Stuey 24th November 2006, 23:28
I don't think that MS could afford a price cut yet. If they could, they would do it right about now so that in the holiday rush, people would buy xbox 360s and a half dozen games and accessories.
Quote webbyman 25th November 2006, 10:36
the thing is... you then have to be 10x stupider to then hand the console over for a dollar.
