"Now with advertising" - Enterprising lass Leah Culver sold ad space on the cover of her new MacBook Pro.

"Now with advertising" - Enterprising lass Leah Culver sold ad space on the cover of her new MacBook Pro.

News from the "WTF?" department:

Everyone has been drooling over the nice, shiny new MacBook Pros lately. You know the ones - Core 2 Duo, plenty of RAM, a decent hard drive, all in that brushed metal frame. Well, one girl managed to get some substantial reimbursement for her purchase - by selling the cover space for advertising.

California resident Leah Culver came up with the idea some time ago and began a website to solicit contributions. For $150 per square inch, you could have a laser-etched logo on the brushed aluminum case. Too rich for your blood? Well, for a mere $30, she would travel to any bar she could get to via public transit and buy you a beer.

As absolutely absurd as it sounds, Leah's ad campaign was incredibly successful. The final unit that she purchased totals roughly $3,300.00 USD, and the front cover is now chock full of ads (see below). Of course, don't ever let it be said that this was solely an opportunistic venture - there's a little space for "[heart] mom + dad" on the case as well. Awwww.

In what might be a rather ungrateful (but brutally honest) parting shot, Leah signs the bottom of her page with, "Don't worry, your laser-etched ad will probably be around longer than your internet company!" Ouch.

Got a thought on this (rather unique) method of computer funding? Tell us about it in our forums.

Heh nice idea, just hope it doesn't break as im pretty sure Apple wouldn't like that being returned to them!
Quote jezmck 22nd November 2006, 18:07

Quote Mankz. 22nd November 2006, 18:09

amazing how she got some of those companies to pay her for advertising.
Quote specofdust 22nd November 2006, 19:02
Gotta hand it to her, she showed some initiative and got a (presumably) free laptop out of it. Many people will probably try to copy her, but I doubt any will be as successfull as she at it.

GENIUS!!!

Pretty cool imo... :)

I wonder how well an overweight, balding, middle aged guy would have done? - or any guy for that matter - I bet he'd sell a lot fewer $30 beers. (although in San Francisco ...?)

Great idea...just like the scottish uni student who raised $1m through selling blocks of 10x10pixels for advertising on a website.

I actually think the top looks pretty cool like that and all the adverts are very crisp.

I think adding her photo at the bottom helped quite a bit!

A free unique Macbook, well done to her!

I'd love it.
Quote Duste 22nd November 2006, 23:11
I should slap her for saying Digg won't last as long as those laser-etchings! :P

WOW this girl was crazy enough to etch adds on her laptop, then turn around a dis the people that gave her money. Sounds like one of those bumbs on the street asking for money then turning around saying thanks $Y*&$* this will feed my crack fix.

If any one trys this int he future, thank the people after.

No dis-respect intended, nice idea and all that. But it seems like begging taken to a new level. Like no longer a case of " Please could you spare some money I'm homeless and starving", but now it's " Please could you spare some money I need a new Hi-spec laptop computer".
Quote Cthippo 23rd November 2006, 12:32
Or, more like

"We're so desperate for new advertising ideas we'll shell out $150 per Square inch in a student's laptop that no one will ever see"
Quote Gushy 23rd November 2006, 14:25
excellent idea, well done to her. It looks pretty cool, I wouldn't be ashamed using that in starbucks.
Quote Redbeaver 23rd November 2006, 15:33
she's cute.

oh well, ok, the first thing that pops to my mind is yup, good job... it can be considered begging to some point, but its an honest request... and to be sucessful like that, that means she does put some time and effort too i bet! and laser etching isnt the exactly the easiest and cheapest method anyway...

but when i see $30 to meet up wit u in a bar and have a beer... a girl (didnt said a woman, but a girl)... in SF... well, heck, i thought i'll check the link.......

and hey.

i'd buy HER a beer :)
Quote [USRF]Obiwan 23rd November 2006, 15:58
Yeah thats the way we should all do it: If you buy a fridge from (fill in brandname), you demand that the branding on the fridge will be removed or you will pay 150 dollar less for it.

Even better when you buy a car. Demand that they remove all branding because (fill in brandname) have not payed you for riding around their (fill in brandname) as a commercial signwagon.

:D

Lots of people have seen it now - & Bit-Tech isn't the first or last place to tell this story so I'd say they got their monies worth (in advertising), unlike the silly saps who paid $30 for a beer. :)
Quote acidfire 23rd November 2006, 19:19
keep in mind there are people who just flat out run themselves into debt buying useless crap online and then running a begging site to get out of it. Atleast with this girl and the million dollar web page provide advert space in return. Good on them for being that clever.

Exactly, and I'll admit that I've looked at a couple of the companies listed there (mac-fusion and hungrr), mostly because their names sounded interesting. Thus, they're getting their moneys worth.
Quote jezmck 25th November 2006, 11:38
I didn't look at any of them, I'm a lazy surfer - give me a hyperlink and I might click, otherwise - you'd be lucky.
Quote mikeuk2004 25th November 2006, 13:14
Put it this way. How many advertising branding stickers have you on your laptop. I mean the Intel / Windows / ATI / Nvidia /AMD stickers stuck all over.

They didnt pay me so I peel mine off. I like the idea she had and it worked, but shame she cant change her sponsers and get new ones unless she gets it replated. :).
Quote mikeuk2004 25th November 2006, 13:17
I might have to try it...thinking what do I want to buy. Ill get my wife to pose topless on my website, that should bring some sponsors my way. But I wont let her drink with anyone :p

is it just me or did some of the images not turn out?
