What is actually going through this woman's mind? Has she just found out she's getting a Zune for Christmas?
A
blog written by Mary Jo Foley over on ZD Net, is reporting that Microsoft's Zune MP3 player is currently incompatible with Windows Vista.
The reason for this unbelievable move is apparently Microsoft's desire to get the product out in time for the Christmas rush.
Apple Insider is obviously revelling in the situation and has posted a picture (which you can see to the right) of the Zune's aborted installation. What will really tickle you is the woman in the background who will be the face of all Zune installations. Look closer and you'll probably end up as confused as us; is that her letting out a yelp of pleasure or is she distraught by the pair of lovers snogging right next to her? Either way it's all a bit mental.
Microsoft supporters will reply to this fiasco saying that Vista isn't even out yet. They are, of course, right - but the point remains, why is Microsoft releasing an operating system that doesn't work with one of their headline products straight away?
It's not all bad news for Vista though.
The Inquirer is reporting that some hardware manufacturers are releasing 256MB PCI graphics cards that will allow users running old motherboards to use Vista with all the fancy interface graphics turned on. Diamond Multimedia's
Viper X1300 PCI has both 256MB and Direct X 9.0 compatible, allowing you to run Vista with the nice
Aero graphics turned on even if your PC is a relative dinosaur
Has Microsoft let off a massive guff? Discuss in the
forums.
well you cant walk into a shop and buy it, its a pre-release public test version
Zune is a waste of money imo (so no flaming ;)) but MS should really have checked this :p
holly s***t!!!
When I'm in the market for a portable media player, I'll be purchasing a piece of hardware that will play every piece of media I throw at it, with minimum security fuss and maximum file and user flexibility. Something on par with the average USB stick. Plug it in, move files, unplug, play files. No drivers needed, or custom installation required. No ********, just pure simplicity.
That said, second thing to look out for would be sound quality, and third would be battery life.
Thats two chicks getting it on
Good one Microsoft ;)
When you reported that "Zune doesn't play for sure" I never dreamed that would extend to Vista.
:) From the product description for the "Diamond Viper ATI X1300 PCI 256MB Video Card":
onetwo and putitthem on my K6/3+ :DThat'll be an iriver then?
Or iAudio from Cowon. My player is an X5. It appears as a usb hard drive in Windows. Drag, drop and done. And plays Ogg, Flac as well as the rest.
I don't see the need to be tied in to some DRM-infested online music store. Buying a CD is better value and you get to choose your audio format and have the disk as backup etc.
The Zune doesn't install properly in many XP systems:

The real news is what was linked to from Engadget, after a fairly enjoyable read all I can say is that Microsoft's department that does their testing (if they have one) are atrocious.
And like iTunes, I'm sure the Zune software will improve as newer versions are released.

The guys at ars are very generous though. The WiFi in it's current inception is totally useless and the player failed to sync the reviewers music library and it still gets a 7.
If 2 of your major selling points fail or are seen as irrelevant on launch day, the initial impression you are giving is going to be bad. Apple could live through it when launching iPods, as there were no entrenched and dominant mp3 players back then. But today, if you want to go for iPod's throat, you have to do much, much better than this.
I'm sure it doesn't work on that either. It doesn't work on RTM. There is, however, a patch already - which hasn't been released yet.
