Keep waiting for the big-screen Master Chief.
The world of films based on video games is in something of a upside down state at the moment, as one project is severely set back and another gets green lighted.
We've all been looking forward to the film version of the epic
Halo, which is being Executive Produced by Peter Jackson, he of
Lord of the Rings fame. Last we heard of it, it was being financed by Fox and Universal, based on an Alex Garland (
The Beach) screenplay and was in pre-production.
Fox and Universal pulled out of the deal a couple of weeks ago, leaving Microsoft and its partners to find another financial partner. Well, they haven't done so so far, and the film has officially been delayed.
Wingnut Films, the production company putting the film together, said that "While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait."
On the flipside, Capcom has given the go-ahead to a new film based on
Street Fighter. To those who remember the stunningly awful original, starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue, this will not be great news. However, the new film will be based around the story of Chun-Li, so should at least have a good opportunity for a gorgeous female lead in the vein of
Dead or Alive.
The film will hit in 2008, to mark the franchise's 20th anniversary. Can anyone remember
the original Street Fighter?
Sad for the
Halo film or delighted about Chun Li? Or both? Give us your take on videogame movies
over in the News Discussion forum. We're waiting.
Flawless Victory!
You presume too much, sir.

^^^ you are for the SF film! :D
I'm sorry but that was beyond awful.. and not so cliched awful that it became "good". It was awful in all ways possible. :(
The only sort of SF "movies" should be anime/manga which has been, and are almost always excellent to watch. SF should never have been live-action -- it will never ever work.
the MK movies, while bad, we're still watchable, although Chris Lambert made Raiden sound like a complete pansy. They should have had elements of John Carpenter's "Big Trouble in Little China" in there, i.e., the Storm Brothers. Now *there* was a perfect Raiden... :)
well that makes two of us then :D
in fact on another note, not a huge amount of games about films are stunning either. maybe the 2 should stay apart
To make another one is just (there are no words to describe).
Its just unbelievably bad. Soo soo sad that it was Raul Julia's last film...
Jez
I think he means Uwe Boll movies.
Frankly I had no hopes for the Halo movie either.
It seems to me that the better the game the worse the movie (anyone remember Wing Commander?)
Nezuji :)
