Would this laptop get you girls.? Probably not but its still cool

Sony is jumping on the Casino Royale bandwagon by releasing a special edition spy-themed laptop. We usually wouldn't cover a cash-in of this magnitude but I really liked the style of this and would actually want one (if I could afford it).

The case is called the James Bond 007 TX Spy Gear bundle VGN-TXN007 and promises any potential buyers the opportunity to gather intelligence for your next assignment. The specs are listed as:
  • Processor Name:
    Intel® Core™ Solo Processor U1400 Ultra Low Voltage (1.20GHz19, 2MB L2 Cache)
  • Front Side Bus Speed:
    533MHz
  • Memory:
    2GB PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2 (1GB x 2) (Expandable to 2GB)
  • Graphics:
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
128MB dynamically allocated shared RAM video memory
  • Hard Drive:
80GB33 (4200rpm) Ultra ATA with G-Sensor™ Shock Protection

Not a bad price either coming in at $3,899.99 when you consider you get a camera and a cool Bond suitcase.

Excited by the new James Bond movie or hate these sponsored tie-in products? Let us know in the forums.

You reckon? Core Solo @ 1.2 GHz? I know it's a super-lightweight but it's hardly sizzling. No way would you want to game on this thing anyway, so I'd say the GMA graphics is probably a good match - saves power and weight vs anything more meaty.

Still though, I take exception to the price - almost $4,000 is a substantial wedge, and I'd be expecting a lot of laptop for that kind of money. I'm sure the price of this laptop includes a hefty premium for the Bond branding and accessories.

Sony are advertising USB sticks with James Bond/Casino Royale styling in this month's Empire. It looks like James Bond is the only way they'll make money...

Why have 2GB of Ram with a Core Solo? (Misread it as Core 2)

I guess to keep Vista happy? Though I agree, it is a bit odd to park 2GB in a medium spec laptop that clearly isn't meant for gaming.

Incidentally, Core Solo is part of Core 2 - Core 2 Duo = dual core, Core 2 Solo = single core (by extension, Core 2 Quad = 4 core etc.)

There's no '2' there, this laptop sports an original Core Solo.

Not overly impressed with the spec for the money, it is a nice case though ;).

sony vaio? i'm sure they could have found a better manufacturer to endorse their film, the screens are nice but the machines are terrible

I can get a AMD ML-44, 512 nVidia SLI card, 2gb Ram, 17" widescreen through SagerNotebooks or Alienware for the same or even less then that.

For those pitiful specs? ... I'll pass. The suitcase and camera can only be $1,000 at the VERY VERY most. Vaio is just too much money for too much crap.

Ah, gotcha, so it's effectively a Pentium M. that's even less impressive then. TBH I don't understand why anyone would buy a new laptop (especially one costing this much) without a dual core chip, let alone one without even Core 2's advancements over Pentium M.

uh yeah. Except Sony made the movie, it only makes sense that Sony endorses it.

lmao, good point

The viao's are neat dont get me wrong, but neat stops at a grand and a half for that bundle. Novelty is for something in that price range. Already stated about how you can build this and that for the same price. I guess this is just neat to look at. I doubt sony expects to sell all that many of these.

It might be "slow", but that particular laptop (the one on offer appears identical to the VGN-TX37/VGN-TX47) weighs 1.25kg (that's 2.75lb) and the *standard* battery lasts 6-9 hours. Try getting that from your battleship-sized 17" core duo laptop.

You can get 6 hours on a "battleship-sized 17" hp with a turion for $900.

Oh common, the batteries take at least a few minutes to explode.
