Project Log: Here
The_Gnu gave us some of the best modding spectacles of 2009, with his Protohype scratchbuild, which won Mod of the Month in October that year, and now he's back with a new project called Get A Life.
The project incorporates loads of original ideas. These metal cubes were cut neatly from large chunks of sheet metal, and we had no idea about purpose until later in the project log.
Our favourite part of the log, though, was this custom-made heatsink for the Zotac ION ITX A330 mini-ITX motherboard. Made by scavenging the guts from a Titan twin turbo GPU cooler, The_Gnu dismantled the heatpipes from the cooler, made his own contact plate and constructed his own cooler to deal with the heat from the Zotac motherboard's hot spots.
We get our first idea of the shape the numerous cubes here. As another forum member realised, they will take the shape of a classic 1-up mushroom from the Mario games. We also get a great view of the custom cooler being offered up to the motherboard with its stock heatsinks removed.
even more intriguing is the fact the cooler appears to rely on the large metal backplate for cooling. It's a totally bizarre project, but one that also looks awesome, and we can't wait to see it in action.
