The Inner Cage
I had decided from the start that I wanted a seamless look to this case. That meant that there could be no PC motherboard trays riveted to the back like in other G5 mods. For this to work therefore, the modifications would have to be covered up by painting the inner cage.
First off I marked out and cut the rear I/O panel where the Lian Li Motherboard tray would go. My initial idea around attaching this was to use aluminium epoxy putty.
This wasn’t such a good idea however, as it was a very weak join and even split while I was sanding it down. I then had the brainwave of using strips of aluminium to reinforce the join on the inside, drilling out the holes to keep the original look. They were glued into place using a very high strength epoxy, and then heated to very high temps with a heat gun. The holes were then sanded for a smooth look inside.
I used a Lian Li V series case front panel module for the front of the case and a blue vandal resistant switch. I was again aiming to keep things looking very similar to the original G5. I even used the I/O ports from the back of the G5 as a template for the rounded look of the USB and Firewire ports. These were dremelled and needle filed out of a piece of 2mm thick aluminium. Finally, they were attached with epoxy and alu strips inside like the back panel.
