The Top

The top plate for FiveWood was cut from mahogany, with maple and walnut trim. In the above shot, you can see the shaping of the maple rings for the case's three exhaust fans.

The holes had to be re-cut with a scroll saw once Chris's great drill press experiment failed (hey, you can't win them all!). Once completed, the fan holes account for around a quarter of the top's total surface area, allowing plenty of ventilation. These are controlled by thermistors so that they are not at top speed all the time.

The top rails of the case were carved out of one single piece of solid mahogany (shown on the upper left). This work was done with only two pieces of equipment - a scroll saw and a lot of sandpaper. A lot of sandpaper.
