Th test the relative performance of each of the controllers we used ATTO disk benchmark which is a straight forward but surprisingly popular tool for testing storage devices or controllers.
The benchmark sequentially writes and reads files from 0.5KB to 8MB and can also be adjusted for overlapped I/O and a variety of queue depths. We tested performance at three different file sizes (4KB, 1MB and 4MB). All other setting in the tool were left at their default value and each test was ran three times to ensure consistency.
The red bars in the graphs below denote controllers listed as capable of SATA 6Gbps speeds while the blue bars in the graph denote controllers only listed as SATA 3Gbps.
