Sometimes it’s hard to believe that Asus makes more than just Eee PCs and Republic of Gamer motherboards, but there are many more products that come out of the Taiwanese giant’s factories these days. One such range often left in the frankly huge shadow left by the Eee PC and RoG lines is the company’s monitor line up.

There has been a selection of samey 22-inch widescreen monitors hitting the market over the past few months—and we’ve tried to weed out the best of them—but so far we haven’t been overly impressed with what we’ve seen.

But with 22-inch widescreen LCDs starting from as little as £130, it’s where the current bang for buck is when you plot desktop real estate against typical asking price. There is a catch though, and it’s the fact that you can buy any well-priced (and even not so well priced) 22-incher you want and it’ll use a TN+Film panel.

Disappointingly, no monitor manufacturer has yet released a relatively affordable 22-inch monitor based on superior PVA, MVA or IPS technology but we can always hope. TN+Film panel technology got a bad name for itself in its early days mainly because all the first-generation TN panels were generally rubbish if colour accuracy was the primary concern, but things have been steadily improving over the past nine months or so.

Today, we’ve got the relatively humble-looking Asus VK222H 22-inch widescreen display on the test bench and we’re hoping that the trend will change. It will come as no surprise to learn that the Asus VK222H is equipped with a 6-bit dithered TN+Film panel with a characteristically fast response time of just 2ms.
