Mass Effect 2 vs Dragon Age: Origins

It’s curious that two similar games from the same games studio differ so much in how enjoyable they both are. While Mass Effect 2 feels fresh and vivid, Dragon Age feels dull, clichéd and derivative. That’s quite an achievement, considering that both games are set in unique worlds and both have essentially the same plot. What’s so wrong with Dragon Age to provoke such a reaction?

We’re changing it up on the podcast, with a gaming only podcast this week, and a hardware one to follow next week. So yes, Episode 4 of Series 3 of the combined Custom PC and bit-tech podcast is here. It’s hosted by Joe, and he is joined by Harry, Rich and Alex. Apparently 50 Cent is in the new Call of Duty game, id Software don’t like the PS3 and there’s going to be lots of goat sex in Dragon Age Origins. There’s also a brand new competition!

I'm still ploughing through the prequel novel to Dragon Age: Origins (yes, I know it's been ages, but I'm almost finished - review soon, I promise). Between readings I've been musing, as is my wont, about the role of Bards in role-playing games. What exactly is the point of them? They're not as cool as Thieves or Assassins and and don't have the fighting abilities of even a Ranger or Cleric. Why bother?
