Bit-tech & Custom PC Pub Quiz: Logos and latecomers

Also marked at this point were the logo round sheets that the teams had been poring over since they arrived. Forever Alone (another team assembled that evening, hence the name) did themselves proud here, scoring a mighty 10/10 for the round. Whether or not this result was sponsored by Google, we’ll never know, but it was enough to catapult them from 9th to 3rd in the overall standings.

Another big gainer was team Epic.LAN who after a number of steady rounds, muscled in on the top spot along side OCBATGTTY. Special mention here also goes The Lurkers in the Dark, who gave us a chuckle by identifying the Maxis logo as that of the Death Star; we were also glad to see that All Our Beers Are Belong to Us managed to successfully name the bit-tech, Custom PC and Corsair logos that were at the top of the page… good job team.

Round three asked teams to identify ten short game music clips, and it was one that tripped some teams up. Poor old Under Qualified only scored a single point, and R.A.G. and Forever Alone also stumbled here too. Some teams clearly know their game music however, as Steve Ballmer’s Neck Sweat scored a mighty eight points lifting them from the foot of the table up to 12th place.

The Film, Game or Hardware round was up next, and for this round we read out a sentence from a review conclusion and asked the teams to tell us if the review was of a film, game or piece of hardware. We thought that this’d be pretty tricky stuff, but it turned out to be one of the highest scoring rounds - most teams posted six or seven points.

Every team, for example, identified that the quote ‘So, does it live up to the hype surrounding its launch? Has it been worth the wait, or are the first few customers going to be disappointed?’ was from a hardware review. A special shout out also goes to Team Aria Forums, who not only identified that quote four was from a game review, but even which game review it was from, much to Joe’s delight.

So, that’s the half way stage, and with five rounds gone and totalled we’ve got team Epic.LAN in the top spot, untroubled in that position since the picture round. After them are OCBATGTY, Forever Alone and Quiztopher Walken, who are narrowly followed by 192.168.X.X and Wheatley’s Space Program. Meanwhile, bringing up the rear of the table is a three way tie between The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Kick, Team Aria Forums and Team Corsair.

The half time break beckoned, and with it, our make-a-meme competition where we gave each team some meme templates to fill in and a promise that we’d put them all up on the wall for all to see. The response to this was slightly overwhelming, with every team pitching in and having a go, most of which were poking fun at Joe in some way, much to Harry’s delight.

After the break, we moved on to the cryptically titled General Tech Knowledge Round where we tested smarts on everything from consoles to iPad screen resolutions. This proved to be a tough round for the leaders, Epic.LAN, who scored only three points, meaning they relinquished the lead to OCBATGTY (who scored a strong nine) for the first time in three rounds. 192.168.X.X also scored nine points, bringing them into 3rd and level with the previous leaders.

Amazingly though the Latecomers - who as their name suggests, arrived at the break - broke on to the scene with a full 10 out of 10 score. Were we witnessing some kind of Rocky underdog fight back? Would they be able to catch the top teams with only half the quiz remaining? On to round six - the ultra geeky acronyms round - to find out.
