G.Skill, a company better known for its memory products, has announced the launch of a pair of mechanical gaming keyboards: the Ripjaws KM780 MX and KM780 RGB.

As the names suggest, the KM780 boards share the same general design. Both include a 2mm aluminium top-plate onto which the Cherry MX switches are mounted, designed to provide a solid typing experience, along with dual-coat laser-etched keycaps. Interesting, the company has also opted to include a full set of replacement gaming keys finished in textured and eye-catching red, with a keycap case for whichever set you aren't using. The latter even includes a key-pulling tool in its lid, and can be attached to the rear of the keyboard.

Other shared features include back-lit media control bottoms, a die-cast metal volume roller, and an integrated volume display located above the keypad at the right-hand side of the keyboards. Both include on-the-fly macro recording which maps to six dedicated macro keys, three hotkeys to lock-out the Windows key, adjust back-light brightness, and set a timer, and a foldable mouse-cable holder at the rear for a neater desk. Both also include detachable wrist-rest units.

Where the two differ is in their choice of switches: the KM780 MX uses standard Cherry MX switches with a single-colour back-light; the KM780 RGB uses the transparent Cherry MX RGB switches with per-key full-colour back-lighting. Both will be available in a choice of Red, Brown, and Blue switch types, offering lightweight linear actuation, non-clicky tactile actuation, and clicky tactile actuation respectively.

Models with Brown and Red switches will launch this month, G.Skill has claimed, with Blue variants to follow at an unspecified later date. UK pricing has yet to be confirmed, with a US recommended retail price having been set of $129.99 and $189.99 for the KM780 MX and RGB respectively. More information is available on the company's website.
