The Big S has thrown it's weight behind HomePlug Powerline Alliance, a group of companies that are touting networking standards based on sending packets whizzing round your ring main.

The addition of Sony to the the group will help the Alliance promote and develop its new HomePlug AV spec, which will let devices share video content at a maximum bandwidth of 200 Mb per second - A considerable increase in the current 14 Mb per second limit the devices currently offer, and a viable alternative to fast wi-fi without having to run dedicated networking cables.

You can read more on Sony's involvement over at PCWorld, and they also have a nice run down of the tech here
