The long-discussed Warcraft feature film has snagged British director Duncan Jones to helm the project, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Jones is best known for poignant sci-fi film Moon and the Quantum Leap-like Source Code. Describing himself as a gamer, he will be working with a script from Charles Leavitt.

'So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper movie of a video game? I’ve always said its possible. Got to do it now!' Jones tweeted following his appointment to the role.

Jones will also be working with Blizzard senior vice-president of story and franchise development Chris Metzen, who is responsible for a lot of the fantasy world's lore.

The Warcraft film, being produced by Legendary Pictures, currently has a budget of $100m and is set to be a live action affair as opposed to the animation that a lot of fans initially assumed it would be.

The film is aiming for a 2015 release which will mean it has some stiff competition as it will be in a similar release window as the Avengers 2 and the new Star Wars trilogy.

Originally discussed in 2007, the last director the production had was Spiderman and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi. He however dropped out of the project last year in order to work on Disney's Wizard of Oz prequel instead.
