Rift developer Trion has announced a new MMO, Defiance, which it is working on as part of a collaboration with SyFy that will involve a new TV series of the same name.

The Defiance MMO will be an open-world game shooter for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The plot focuses on a future-Earth ravaged by past wars and where humans and aliens have only started to peacefully co-exist.

Trion is promising a smooth blend of the shooter and MMO genres, with the 'intense action of an AAA console shooter' coupled with the structure and scope of an MMO.

The MMO and TV series are planned to tie-in to each other, evolving over time and influencing each other as they progress, though neither company has explained the details or extent of this evolution.

The Defiance TV series is being created by Universal Cable Productions and the script is being penned by FarScape scribe Rockne S. O'Bannon.

No release date has yet been announced for either project, so there's still plenty of time to let us know your thoughts in the forums.
