Dota 2 team Newbee has won The International 2014 and taken home more than $5m in prize money.

Newbee beat ViCi Gaming with three wins to one at the Seattle-based tournament and claimed the event’s Aegis of Champions trophy. ViCi claimed second place and was awarded prize money of approximately $1.5m.

Chinese team Newbee was considered somewhat of a dark horse at the event as they were only formed in March of this year. During the tournament, Newbee was almost eliminated at the group stage with seven wins to eight losses before making a resounding comeback during the main event.

Third and fourth place went to Evil Geniuses and Team DK respectively, each winning approximately $1m and $800,000 respectively. Last year’s champions, Alliance, were left way behind in twelfth place after being knocked out in the group stage.

Team Liquid also raised eyebrows during the tournament after qualifying through the play-offs and performing strongly in early stages of the event, making it through to the third phase of the tournament and finally finishing up in tenth place.

Sixteen teams participated in the tournament in total with prize money going to all but fifteenth and sixteenth place. The total prize money raised ended up at $10,931,105. This was comprised of an initial $1.6m put up by Valve and the remainder which was raised predominantly through the sale of Compendiums, digital tournament guides for the tournament.
