William Shatner, the personification of Star Trek, has heralded himself as the man who can revitalise the waning science fiction series. The former Captain of the Starship Enterprise will reprise his old character in the upcoming "Star Trek: Legacy" game.

Legacy, which is being developed by Elder Scrolls creators Bethesda, will be a space-sim covering all 40 years of the Trek experience, ranging across the original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. It certainly looks like it will be a big hitter when it is released in October, with great looking graphics, extensive features and legendary Star Trek story scribe D.C. Fontana responsible for the plotline.

However, the game has been given another major boost by the announcement, reported by Reuters, that Shatner will be getting on board (literally). Shatner explained his reasons for getting involved with the making of games in a telephone interview:

"The interest in 'Star Trek' has waned in the last couple years. It's been around a long time, it's a staple of American life and I think we need something new and different in 'Star Trek."

Shatner, who has recently been commended for his acting in "Boston Legal" and "The Practice", explained the reasons why he wanted the game to do well despite not actually being a gamer himself:

"If it's a good game, keeping true to the characters the best they can and having an interesting story that branches, I think a game can bring a freshness to a franchise like 'Star Trek."

The thespian may have a point there. With other Sci-Fi shows like Stargate and Battlestar Galactica gaining in popularity, and with confirmation that Lucasfilm is set to make a Star Wars television series too, then it looks like Star Trek will need to buck up its act.

Looking forward to Legacy? Or do you think Star Trek is a dying franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
