Cable Modders PSU Modding Supplies Review

Manufacturer: Cable Modders
UK Price (as reviewed): £2.99 - £9.99
US Price (as reviewed): N/A

Power supplies certainly look a hell of a lot better than they did ten years ago. If you spend more than £40 (which you should be doing if you want a decent model), then the likelihood is that you won't see too many exposed cables, while the unit itself may even offer modular cables, allowing you to reduce the number of strands you need to hide if you don't need them all.

However, it has become almost routine for modders to braid their PSUs these days, whether they're modding a case or building one from scratch. The reasoning is pretty sound; despite the huge amount of time needed to complete the task, the end result really is the icing on the cake as far as colour-coordination and eye candy are concerned.

There are plenty of options when it comes down to it too. The easy route involves using cable extensions that bolt onto the end of your PSU's existing cables, although these mean you'll still be left with the existing ones to hide. Corsair is also offering pre-modded modular cable replacements in several colours, although you'll obviously need a compatible PSU to start with and the cables aren't cheap.

The final option is the most common and means detaching all the cables on your PSU from their respective connectors and re-braiding them. The benefit is that you can achieve a completely custom look, with a choice of hundreds of colours and styles of braid and heatshrink. We've looked at a few examples recently, but Water Cooling UK has just sent us a box of goodies that not only stamps its authority on the PSU modding scene, but we believe takes things one step further too.

The range of gear on offer doesn't just cover the usual braid and heatshrink - replacement 18awg insulated wire is available too in a variety of colours, allowing you to go one step further than simply adding your own braid. You can literally replace the cables altogether with a colour of your choice, simply shorten or lengthen them to your precise needs, or create your own extension cables made to measure.

Let's start with the Cable Modders braiding. At last count, there were ten colours of braid and heatshrink available, including white, carbon fibre and UV reactive blue or purple. These are available in kits or separately. The braiding itself is the usual 4mm snag-resistant nylon paracord stuff that's equally as good as anything else we've seen.
