Test Setup

Monitors are tested with the DisplayColor Spyder4Elite colorimeter and the accompanying MQA (Monitor Quality Analysis) software. Each monitor is positioned in the same place in a windowless room with a fixed level of ambient light and left on for half an hour to warm up before testing begins.

After this, we run through the MQA tests, the results of which are presented over the following pages. For the most important figures, we make comparative graphs for an at-a-glance look at how any monitor stacks up against other screens, but also provide screenshots of the results in full for anyone who wants to take a more detailed look at a specific monitor's performance. The tests performed and reported are as follows:

  • Gamut coverage (sRGB and AdobeRGB)
  • Brightness, contrast ratio, and white point at different brightness levels and for each of a screen's different presets
  • Colour accuracy
  • Tone response (gamma)
  • Colour uniformity
  • Luminance uniformity

Following this, we then run the screen through the Spyder4Elite calibration process to see how responsive it is to calibration and how much results can be improved by. These results are not presented, but when relevant they'll be discussed along with everything else in the performance analysis.
