Project Log: Here

We've seen very few fully-submerged PCs over the years, for the simple reason that it's incredibly tricky to pull off such a feat. This hasn't stopped forum user RabidCicada from giving it a damn good shot, though. Since joining our forum and posting his project in October last year, work on the RabidCicada Mineral Oil Computer has now progressed to the stage where we can take a closer look at it in Mod of the Month.

Early renders show what appears to be a fairly compact design, which has been well reinforced to cope with the huge weight of the oil, while also providing a leak-proof seal between the joints.

The cutting was soon under way, with RabidCicada making the clear panels that would comprise most of the case. The project log is very well documented too - so much so that it provides a very good place to start if you want to make a submerged PC yourself.

Thankfully, RabidCicada has a team of people to help, which is just as well, as they appear to be doing a critical job in the above image. The result is the completion of a major step in the project, with the main frame and clear panels now forming one piece.

The next step is to provide a way of mounting the hardware, and RabidCicada has mounted everything on a slide-tray to make removing the hardware as easy as possible. This means that the coolant won't have to be drained if any of the hardware needs to be removed - great stuff.

It's not often we see such a system being built, so make sure you follow the project over on RabidCicada's project log. You can vote for RabidCicada (Mineral Oil Computer) in our forum.
