When it came to making the top panel it was, again, a case of heading off like a bull out the gate in the wrong direction. I wasted lots of time and materials here with jumbled ideas before I narrowed down what I wanted.

Two different sets of these side plates were made only to be discarded.

A frame and solid wood nose piece were made; all of which was screwed together to make a one piece insert. Ultimately it was again all discarded in favour of a more economic and elegant solution.

So a much improved solution was to make side panel trim caps from one piece and have the nose, top panel and front as completely discreet parts.
