Some clever code trickery has led a blogger to concluded that December 1 is the release date for Microsoft's new operating system, Vista.

Microsoft has a new game on its website which invites people to guess the date of the Vista launch. Upon guessing a date, you get a video which is a hint of the true date.

This clever chap quickly discovered that any videos played for dates guess before November 30 are loaded from a webserver directory called 'Early'. Any videos played for dates guessed after December 1 are loaded from a webserver directly called 'Late'. This leads to the inescapable conclusion that Vista is due either on 30 November or December 1, with the latter probably being more likely.

How did he perform this feat of amazing hackery? Simple - View > Page Source. D'oh!

So, it looks like we have a few months to get our HDCP graphics cards and displays, upgrade our RAM, get our 64-bits on and categorise our media before the all-singing, all-dancing operating system hits. Mark December 1 in your diaries - or the end of November if you're more likely to get your OS from BitTorrent than Dabs or Newegg.

Looking forward to it? Check out the discussion over in our forums.
