Samsung has announced its next-generation Galaxy Tab Android tablets, the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5, which include high-resolution AMOLED displays designed to compete with Apple's retina products.

Unveiled at a launch event late last night, the two tablets differ only in their sizes: 8.4" and 10.5" respectively. Internally, the two are identical: driven by either a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 1.9GHz quad-core and 1.3GHz quad-core SoC or Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core processor depending on market, featuring 3GB of RAM and a choice of 16GB or 32GB of storage expandable via micro-SD card, the specifications don't differ depending on model chosen.

That extends to the display, too: featuring organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, the two tablets boast a 1,600x2,560 WQXGA resolution with the smaller unit boasting a higher pixel density thanks to its reduced diagonal size. Both include 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi with MIMO antennas, infra-red control, Bluetooth 4.0 and the option of purchasing a Long Term Evolution (LTE) model with integrated mobile broadband support.

'The tablet is becoming a popular personal viewing device for enjoying content, which makes the quality of the display a critical feature,' claimed JK Shin, president and chief executive of Samsung's IT and mobile arm, at the launch. 'With the launch of the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting the industry bar higher for the entire mobile industry. It will provide consumers with a visual and entertainment experience that brings colours to life, beautifully packaged in a sleek and ultra-portable mobile device.'

The smaller Galaxy Tab S 8.4 measures 125.6mm x 212.8mm and is just 6.6mm thick with an overall weight of 294g in Wi-Fi-only or 298g in LTE flavours, while the larger Galaxy Tab S 10.5 measures 177.3mm by 247.3mm with the same thickness and weighs 465g or 467g for the Wi-Fi and LTE versions respectively. Both come with Android 4.4 KitKat loaded, featuring Samsung's usual customised TouchWiz user interface and various exclusive bundled apps including Samsung's new Papergarden digital magazine service.

UK pricing has been confirmed as starting at £349 or £449 for the Wi-Fi and LTE 15GB Galaxy Tab S 8.4 models respectively, and £449 or £549 for the equivalent 10.5 models. All models will be available from the 4th of July, Samsung has promised.
