Just when you thought that it was all quiet on the Eastern Front, and that there was some progress being made over the next gen DVD format, it all blows up again. This from Reuters:

TOKYO (Reuters) - The president of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. said on Thursday it is up to Toshiba Corp. to yield its position in talks on a unified format for next-generation DVD technology, making clear that Matsushita and its partner Sony Corp. won't budge.

The comments by Kunio Nakamura are the latest sign that negotiations between officials from Toshiba, which backs a new DVD technology called HD-DVD, and Sony and Matsushita, supporters of a rival format known as Blu-ray, have hit a snag.

So the talks seem to be at an impasse. But can Tosh afford to ignore Blu-Ray? Now that we know it's going to be in the PS3, there's going to be an awful lot of drives out there come spring next year...
