Bastion developer Supergiant Games has unveiled its next game, Transistor.

The title will be a sci-fi themed action RPG sporting a similar isometric view as the hugely popular Bastion. The game will feature a female main character called Red wielding a large sword that a mysterious group of attackers is trying to wrest from her.

The artwork has taken a turn for the darker and the team is aiming for a more mature art style in general in contrast with Bastion's more vibrant palette.

'We're designing our next game to seamlessly integrate thoughtful strategic planning into a fast-paced action experience, complete with our studio's signature melding of responsive gameplay and rich atmospheric storytelling,' said Supergiant writer and designer Greg Kasavin. 'All of us from the Bastion development team are working together again on this new project, with the aid of a handful of talented new people who've joined us since Bastion's launch.'

Supergiant Games confirmed over Twitter that the project is being self-funded by the studio in the same way that Bastion was.

Transistor still has a way to go and is currently scheduled for an early 2014 release. Supergiant games has not confirmed which platforms the game will be launched on. The studio intends to answer further questions during PAX East and over its Twitter and Facebook channels.

Supergiant's debut game, Bastion, was released in 2011 and garnered an overwhelmingly positive critical reaction, thanks in part to the distinctive narration that appeared to seamlessly alter depending on your actions in the game. The downloadable title sold more than 500,000 copies in 2011 alone.
