World of Tanks reaches 40 million users

Free-to-play tank MMO World of Tanks has hit the 40 million registered users worldwide.

It has grown its user base by 20 million in the last six months. Developer reports that its European server peaked yesterday with 120,000 concurrent players with the much larger figure of 500,000 unique players on its Russian servers.

'These staggering numbers could not have been reached without your constant support and dedication to the game,' said a spokesperson. 'We at are very proud to have such loyal fans.'

The online tank warfare title has also released version 8.0 of the game, implementing an update to the physics system that enables players to push rival tanks off cliffs and bridges. The rendering and lighting systems have also been updated and several maps have been given a once over to give them a new feel.

New tanks added in the update include four new USSR tank destroyers and a new premium tank alongside several new customisation options for players.

World of Tanks first launched in Russia in 2010, debuting in Europe in April 2011 to a positive critical reception. is currently working on two follow ups to the tank MMO with World of Warplanes and World of Warships, the latter of which is scheduled for a 2013 release.
