Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is going free-to-play as it prepares to shut down its servers.

The MMO based on Games Workshop's fantasy battle setting is closing its doors on December 18 due to developer Mythic Entertainment's licensing deal coming to an end.

The game will not however be free to just anyone joining up and is only available to anyone that 'has or had an account in good standing starting October 31st, 2013' according to a press release.

In the run up to its closure, the developers will also be adding a few extra features to mark the game's send off.

'We will be adding new NPCs to the game in order to power up your characters as well as other unique experiences for everyone to enjoy as we say goodbye to Warhammer Online over the next few weeks,' said the Warhammer Team in a press release. 'Please join us and help say goodbye to Warhammer Online in one last big WAAAGH!'

Mythic and Games Workshop decided to part ways back in September. Despite the end of the license meaning the end of the MMO, Warhammer Online producer Carrie Gouskos argues that the relationship between the two companies remains strong.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning was released in 2008 with approximately 800,000 users signing up. Three months later, this had dropped to 300,000 subscribers and servers were gradually consolidated down.
