Japanese gaming giant Square Enix has today announced that it is almost definitely going to buy up British publisher Eidos today, after making an offer on the company.

The Tomb Raider publisher has long been looking for a buyer, with popular contenders being Square Enix, Ubisoft and Electronic Arts - all of whom are eager to get their hands on some of Eidos' most lucrative franchises, such as Tomb Raider, Thief and Hitman.

It seems as if Square Enix is going to be the one that actually closes the deal though, having offered a total of £84 million GBP for the company - a figure which represents 129 percent of Eidos' current market value.

According to Kotaku, the deal has been agreed upon by senior management at both companies, but in order for the deal to actually go forward 75 percent of Eidos' shareholders will have to agree too. The board is scheduled to meet up early next month to discuss the matter.

What exactly might happen to Eidos if Square Enix is successful in its bid is uncertain at the moment and, while a Japanese take on Tomb Raider or Hitman might seem unusual, Square has definitely been trying to target western audiences more lately.

Could Square Enix do justice to all these games, or would you rather see someone else left in charge? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
